I am taking possession of a 2002 40DS in the carribean (tortola) in July and expect to use it in the New York/conn/Nj coastal waters. It comes with a 130Genoa which is fine in the Carib. I am concerned that this may be underpowered for my area. I can upgrade to a 150 or get a Jennaker with a shootscoop, but can't spend for both. Does anyone have experience with a 130 in more turbulent waters?

Hi, I'm from Sweden and this spring I bought a SO 40 DS in France. I have the 2 cabin version and I like the way you sit in shelter to stear. Anyway, I consider to change the mast (furlling Z-spar) to a Selden mast, but then I saw plenty of small cracks in the gelcoat around the cockpit, and I am no longer certain if I should proceed with investing in the boat until I know how I can fix the cracks. Pay attention to this on your boat and let me know if you have the same!

It's a tough call with a 40DS as you're operating with a mast head rig - which puts a lot more emphasis on the genoa. I'd stick with the 130 and get the Asymmetric though - you'll get a lot more out of the boat reaching, you'll be able to sail very shy with it (especially when the wind is light) and you won't lose out too much beating unless it's really flat.
