Has anyone experience of replacing the starter motor on a Yanmar 3YM30 on a SO35. I have the 2 cabin version of the SO35 and there is no access to the starter motor. The engine is going to have to be lifted to get at it. How far does the engine have to be lifted ? We'll decouple the prop shaft from the engine to prevent excess movement at the stern gland but is it necessary to have the boat out of the water "just in case" ?

Engine does not need to be lifted, but you do need to know exactly where to place your much extended sockets to get it out. I managed to change ours, but then I modified the boat with an extra access hatch through the shower/heads wall. See it on the Jeanneau Owners main site here: www.jeanneau-owners.com/hintsandtips/enginehatchso35.html

Dear fulcircle, Thank you very much for a brilliantly helpful response. I think I will have a go at replacing the starter motor to learn just how difficult a job it is before I consider adding your access panel. That looks to be a big job in itself !
By-the-way, what was the cause of your starter motor failure ?

Don't know, didn't get that far. Sent it off to French Marine for warranty, and they replaced it free of charge.
