When I first saw this report I thought it was probably an April Fool scam, but no, it does appear that Yachting Monthly the widely read UK sailing magazine has partnered with a boat insurance company to undertake destructive testing to experience how a boat and crew respond to some sailing disasters.
I do have reservations how much of this will be scientific and not simply sensational journalism, but overall this seems a real shame to ruin what looks a tired but serviceable 1982 Sun Fizz 40 ketch.
Yachting Monthly has a long history of reporting scare stories about the perils (some real, but many imagined) of going sailing and perhaps they have found that they now need to invent some additional horror stories. Intriguingly YM are also reporting that an RYA survey has reported a decline in sailing in the UK - it would be interesting to see if there is any correlation with their reports that continue to feed novices fear of our amazingly safe pastime.
Whilst hopefully less vacuous than the Jeremy Clarkson - Top Gear TV exploits of driving cars over cliffs or demolition derby’s with caravans, nonetheless the punishment being planned for the poor Sun Fizz will apparently include a capsize, a dismasting, holed below the waterline, fire in the engine room before culminating with a butane gas explosion finale.
The article is in the May 2011 edition number 1258

Well, it has been said that FRP-hulled sailboats do not die, they must be assasinated!
