Just flew to Annapolis this past weekend to rec. our new Jeanneau 36i Black Caiman and meet with all the subcontractors (Electrical, Sail, Cushions, Canvas, etc.) Boat looks great, 4-6 wks to get all the bells and whistles installed. Will send pics. and details as we go. Should be sailing down to Hilton Head in late April. So excited to join the Jeanneau family!

I had no idea that Jeanneau produced in the USA, I thought that was only a Beneteau factory. While I'm more comfortable with a shaft vs. a saildrive I'd be a bit nonplussed if I was promised one system and delivered another.
Apart from that - congratulations!

The 36 and 39 versions have been getting made in SC since that factory is a bit slow right now, It also affords a 20K US$ discount over a french built boat due to delivery across the pond. Or at least that is the general discount to the NW US where I am. This will also allow smaller boats that will sell to, such as the 30 and 33 to get built here stateside and compete with Hunter and Catalina. Bene is already building these sizes here, and does quite well price wise, so hopefully Jeanneau can do the same, or even build some of the 2500's here too.

Interesting... This must be new. My proforma (signed in Nov 10) has duty and custom fees as line items (at no charge) and also describes the engine as a sail-drive.
I'm in the process of documenting the complete process from start to finish including choices, upgrades, additional equipment installed, sub contractors, etc. Hopefully the info. will useful to someone looking to purchase in the future.

......or even build some of the 2500's here too. Marty Seems that only the Sun 2000 is now in production. Shame as the 2500 looked a great entry boat and was made using a full hull injection moulding - maybe there is a replacement in the wings? M

Even the 2000 would not have a lot of competition locally on the continent. If you were to go back to the late 60's into the 70s and early 80's.........lots of competition for a trailer sailor. today not too many. Even the upper 20' range is pretty slim, unless you want a sport boat, and even then around here that is a slow market. Most new boats sold seem to be 35 and bigger.
Hopefully J will build some of the smaller boats in NC, as will B, as both have smaller boats that would/should clobber the competition.

I have a friend with a pod as high as the one pictured above. I don't like steering his boat because I can't see the bow because of the pod. I'm only 5' 9". Maybe that's the issue.
Does anyone else have problems with having the instruments mounted so high?

Don,
I'm 6' and that pod looks tall! I'd be putting all those instruments over the sliding hatch, so I could see them from ANY position I am at holding the wheel etc. Then again, with me having tiller on my 30' boat, the instruments on the back of the cabin, makes it nice to see what is going on, unless a crew has there knee in the way.
Besides, who wants to see pics of the steering pod, we want the CAIMEN!

Congrats Blackcaiman; you'll be very pleased with your choice of sailboat. We are delighted with our new 36i - she's well balanced, responsive and great fun flying the assymetric chute.
Do not be concerned regarding the view over the instrument pod; it is fine to steer from the side of the wheel (with a good view forward under the foresail).
Great photos; you will certrainly need the battery upgrade. We are currently replacing the two 70A house batteries with two Trojan 130A deep cycle lead acid batteries (keeping the original 70A start battery). Look forward to your report on the BALMAR 110A alternator. Good Sailing, Gerry

We were in Annapolis one more time this weekend, we drove up to take supplies, and check on the progress. Everything is on schedule, we take poss. week of 4/22. We are setting the boat up for coastal cruising and long stays in different locations. When we agreed to purchase the boat, my husband said I could have anything on it I wanted (I think he was just happy to get me on a sailboat). He is so old-school... The only things he picked out were new sails, prop. and a good sound system. All the other goodies are for me. Black Caiman before bottom paint Black Caiman after bottom paint

blackcaiman, Looks good, seems like you are doing a lot of the work yourself. That's too complicated for me. When will you get launched? Are you keeping her in Annapolis? Happy Sailing, mkremedy
