I wish to have the Volvo shaft seal replaced on my Sun Odyssey 40. The local boat yard say that the engine has to be moved to remove the shaft from the shaft coupling due to shortage of space. The shaft coupling is based on a Morse taper with woodruff key held with a retaining nut recessed into the coupling. It is not the usual clamp type coupling. Has anyone replaced the Volvo seal without moving the engine with this type of coupling?

Have a look a little further down at a forum called "Stuffing box", I think most, if not all the info you are after will be there.

Replaced this on a 32' two days ago. Once the shaft can slide aft 9'' or so I cant see what he issue might be?

ANother option assuming the boat is out of the water, is to remove the rudder. This might be easier and quicker than the motor. Along with, not saying you will have this issue, but there seem to be a few rudder stock issues with some boats your size. This will give you a reason to check out this potential issue also. I believe only two boats have shown up on this forum with issues, but worth checking for none the less.......

Job done, but how? did you remove the engine? or did you have enough space to slide the shaft back.

No need to move engine with extractor tool as shown in 'Stuffing box'. Came of with a little effort. Thanks for the link.
