Our SO35 has the Raymarine ST4000 compass installed on the aft bulkhead directly under the port lazerette locker. All well and good until you put a bicycle or generator in the locker! The compass does not like that much metal nearby! Has anyone found a better place to mount the compass? I had thought the simple fix would be to move it to the starboard side, but worry that the propane bottles would cause the same problem. Also, would extending the compass wiring cause a problem?

I see how your generator would wreak havoc with the compass, but I don’t see how a bicycle would as there shouldn’t be anything there that generates a magnetic field. Having said that, we replaced our 4000 on our 35 with a S1. When we did, the installer mounted the new compass under the port settee storage area. It’s near the center of the boat and down low. We just have to make sure we don’t put anything that has a magnet down there. We learned that the hard way. The problem you’ll have is the length of the cord attached to your current compass has probably been cut to fit the factory location, which will limit where you can move it.

On our SO35, the fluxgate is mounted on the aft face of the transom space in the centreline area, but we have a 2 cabin version. No problems as long as we dont put the bikes there.
There is steel in bikes!!!!!

No problems as long as we dont put the bikes there. There is steel in bikes!!!!! Maybe some older bikes. Most modern bikes have very little ferrous metal, steel or otherwise, especially the folding bikes small enough to store in that locker.

We store two bikescin the locker behind the heads which is where the compass is located and do not appear have any problem.

Th autopilot compass should be swung each year. Presumably if you put t bikes in there and then swing the compass you should ave no problwm
