OK - it's that time of year to service your winches!! It is one of the most expensive items onboard your boat - but OFTEN overlooked, or put off to next year...... However, it's not hard to do once you can convince yourself it's not going to be like a 10000000 piece jigsaw puzzle getting it back together!! Take pics as you go along. If it is a Harken winch, have a look at their website - they have exploded pictures of every winch they have made - so if you do run in to trouble, help is only a web page away!! As for oils and greases. I used Harkens own. Don't over pack the winch thinking the more oil / grease the better it'll be!! Wrong - it'll just gum up quicker. Despite my Harken 44 winch looking pretty disgusting inside (I only bought the boat two months ago) - nothing needed replacing. Just a good wash off and a lube. Even the Pawl's were in good condition. I hope this helps P.S I have uploaded some pics - but could only work out how to upload 1 pic per reply to the thread!! sorry... old dog and new tricks and all that!!

I am curious to know why you unbolted the winch from the boat. Regards Admiral

A few reasons....
As the bolts go through in to the cockpit locker it took less than 5 mins to remove from the boat. This then enabled me to service the winch in the warm on the kitchen table!! (although the wife was not as excited about this as I was!!!). Also, as the boat is still in the water - I didn't want to chance loosing any bits over the side.
Oh... nearly forgot - the wine stayed at a good temp too!!
I'll be doing the other winches very soon. So if anyone would like any other pics / close ups - let me know.
Best Regards
Ian

Ian,
What some folks will do, not that I have with winches that are stuck on the boat per say, is take a large box, cut a hole just slightly bigger than the winch,. Put over the winch so when you pull the winch apart, the box keeps things controlled or caught.
That is a good how to on a Harken/Barberossa winch. I believe there is a Lewmar how to on the other part of the site with artciles etcc.

Hi,
I have heard that on some "older" winches parts can fall out as the drum is lifted - giving you the problem of - how were they assembled in the first place!!!
I can only confirm that on the Harken winches NOTHING pings out or falls apart as you lift the drum off.
I plan to do the 2nd winch within the next few days!
Just one tip.... if you are going to remove the winch so you can sort it out in the warm. Don't forget to loosen the centre screw on the top of the winch prior to removing it. It's done up pretty tight and you'll end up chasing it all around the kitchen table to loosen it!!! (there was also a danger of knocking the wine over!!!).

Great thread Ian
Could you please clarify whether or not it is okay to drink beer or rum while servicing winches? Or are the best results achieved by drinking wine?

That is a very good point - and perhaps something I need to research.
I've now got two more winches to do - so the beer is in the fridge. And the Rum is on stanby!!
Apologies to all for this oversight!
