I have had a problem with the furler on the genoa of my SO29.2. I have tried to lubricate the upper drum, re-fitted the halyard and also tried to change the length of the halyard to drum shackle. No matter what I do, it seems to work for a day( maybe hours) and then the furler jams. The problem being that the halyard wraps around the upper part of the foil top by a half turn or so. I am now at the point of getting a rigger to repalce the upper drum. Anybody got any advice or idea, what could be the problem. Have I created a problem myself or it it simply a worn drum bearing. The boat is 1999 and is used lightly
Regards

couple of other things you might want to check
the lead angle from the mast to top swivel is there a halyard diverter ?
if the above is ok is the halyard tight enough

Thanks for those links, I have seen the middle one before. The first link is informative and has probably identified the fault. I am going to look at it all over the weekend with a rigger
Thanks

Well, the rigger advises new rigging, the fore stay is damaged (probably by halyard wrap) and the rest of the rigging is 11 years old. Looks like a mast off job

David C, I recommend you overhaul your furler when the rigging is changed. Depending on the brand the bearings that keep the forestay centered in the foil may be worn. Most furler manufacturers have installation instructions on their web sites. Also I can confirm the need to have the top bearing as close to the top of the foil as recommended in the installation instructions. I have had to be hauled to the top of the mast to adjust the pennant length on the genoa and once the length was right it furled perfectly. Regards David E

Well, All standing rigging changed, the furler bearings were also changed. The intermediate bushes had dissappeared. The upper deflector was also given an additional deflector and the halyards were replaced as well. All appears to be in working order now. However I had ot replace the goose neck fitting as it was badly worn and about to break. This has lifted the boom by approx 1" as the goosneck was worn down by that amount! I now have a strectched main sail which I can't pull any further up the mast and is leaving a small pucker parallel to the boom. Without adjusting te sail is ther any thing I can do?

Is your foot loose to bolt roped to the boom? Altho this suggestion if you have either will work, loose footed works better than bolt roped, is to use a cunningham, which is a line attached to the luff about a foot above the boom this will pull down the luff, granted make the foot a bit baggier, but also tighten the luff for better sail shape in general. Otherwise, you could lower the gooseneck an inch or two also. BUT< if you have a dodger, the boom now might get in the way, or touch.......
Or last case, have the sail reshaped by a sail maker, or a new sail.........

The foot loose, is roped ot the boom and is kept as tight as possible. There is a cunningham on the luff I could fit a solid kicker I am reluctant to re-locate the goosneck, as the mast is not very heavy and it would mean a lot of new rivet holes in the mast at new location
