SO42i performance fit out? (moved)

Please note that the following "new" thread has been created from recent posts made under a very different subject heading as there is a lot of valuable information that would likely to have been hidden in future searches etc.
Whilst it sometimes can be difficult to stay entirely on subject and digressions are often useful, but if possible please start new threads rather than stray too far off the title subject
ok, a few questions that people may be able to help with:
re: a 42I Performance - questions to make sure all bits and pieces are available at commissioning yard (600 miles from home) or to allow final decisions to be made re: options:
• Is the SeatalkNG Backbone available at the chart table for connection of devices there?
• Who is the manufacturer of the rope cutter that is offered on the option sheet? (I am aware of a few that are said to work better than others)
• Where is the diesel heater installed by the factory? Who manufactures it?
• Is there room within the conduit that presumably exists in the mast for 2 runs of RG213 or LMR400 cable? (vhf + 850mhz 3G)
• Which sailmaking company is currently providing sails for the 42I performance?
Lastly - do any of you have a copy of a 42I electrical diagram in electronic form that you'd be willing to email me?
If you can help with any of these questions many thanks
Roy

Hi Roy,
Mast Conduits
Although I can't be certain of a 42i, I just thought I'd let you know that I had our 36i commissioned in 2008 with two feeds of RG213 inside the mast inside the factory installed conduit. Same as what you want, 1 for VHF, 1 for 850 MHz UMTS 3G (Telstra NextG) using a Benelec Antenna 3dBi Omni.
LMR400 for the NextG would be better, but not significantly at 850 MHz. The difference in loss between RG213 and LMR400 over our 20 m run would only be 2.3 dB @ 850 MHz. As is, it works out to Middle Percy Island, about 85 km off the coast near Mackay, and everywhere else from Mooloolaba to Townsville to Hinchinbrook. The greatest limitation with coverage on NextG at sea is not so much signal strength but losing line of sight to a tower due to curvature of the earth or obstruction.
Seatalk Network
Again, can't be sure of a 42i, but we chose our 36i to have a Tri-Data & Wind from the factory, with an ST6001 Pilot installed in Australia. The seatalk bus on our boat from the factory was only present at the helm station. A Seatalk cables was then run between the pilot head unit (helm) and the pilot computer behind the cupboard in Port-side Aft Cabin (Core pack etc.). This doesn't really answer your question. It will depend on what options you choose, and obviously whether there is a factory chartplotter installed at the Navigation Station.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Geoff.

Thanks for the info Geoff.
The newer 42I's (with ST70's) may be different because (I'm hoping) the SeatalkNG cable would need to go to a junction box somewhere to meet up with the masthead unit and depth/speed sensors.
Thanks for the info re: cables. 2.3db is a measurable reduction - 3 db would halve the signal. I suspect that you are correct though that line of site would get me sooner than db's, even with a masthead antenna.
thanks again for the info. If we make it to the far north I'll buy you a coffee or some of that unusual beer you Queenslanders drink

Geoff,
Good info on the cables and mobile coverage. I am about to get a new mobile for the Telstra Next G network. What phone do you have and does it have a direct connection to the external antenna.
Regards
David

Take a look at the Ericsson W35 - voice and data in one device.
A bit pricey but with a masthead antenna should be good.
Uniden makes a waterproof cordless phone. I intend to get a W35 and one of the Unidens so that phone service will be available anywhere on the boat.
The W35 works like a broadband router - well actually it is a broadband router with voice capability. So our laptop(s) can connect to it with wired ethernet or by 802.1 wireless - again from anywhere on the boat.

Hi rhb and David,
There are quite a few options for devices. We don't personally use our NextG Connection for voice at all but I have used the Ericcson W25 and W35 products and these are great and will work well. I did experience some issues with the W25s falling of the network for remote systems telemetry. This wouldn't be a problem on a boat though.
Our 3G (NextG) is only to provide Internet Access for us. We are a bit escapist and don't mind not having phone coverage when sailing. We just have a BigPond NextG router (with Wifi, i.e. 802.11) to provide internet access throughout the boat. Mostly for getting weather reports and email while coastal sailing and at times video conferencing / Skype. So, sorry David can't help you with finding a phone to use on the network with a direct connection as I have no experience with these.
Cheers,
Geoff.

Hi we have a 42I
We use a laptop at the chart table conected to seatalk we get all the info on the laptop that we do on the e80 in the cockpit and its easier to use also all the tri data depth ets is all available.
The factory fitted rope cutter is next to useless in my opinion.
the cabin heater is situated rear stbd qtr ours is 5.5kw I think and is excellent.
I still havent found anyone who has rigged a storm jib on one.
Hope that helps.
Dan.
