Jeanneau 34.2 Sailing Yacht steering problem
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi, Can anyone help please! The steering wheel has become loose on my 34.2 where it goes into the mounting pod. As the wheel turns it seems to slowly edge backwards out of it's position and as a result looses contact with the rudder. I can push the centre spindle inwards and hold it in as far as poss and it then turns the rudder, but as soon as you release holding it in manually, it edges back out. I think that whatever holds it in place has become detatched, but I seem unable to gain access to the actual pod column to try and see inside and what has become adrift ! Actual model is twin aft cabins. Anyone had similier problems or know how to gain access please ! Jim.

Gilles from Jeaneau just emailed me a diagram of the Goiot pedastal and wheel on my SO 35 . Under the Allen screws that hold the spokes and outer hub on is a 22mm nut that holds the inner hub on a tapered shaft with key - just like the prop setup . Sounds like the nut has backed off .
Cheers Larry

Thanks LarryJ I will have a look at that this weekend - sounds as though it might be the problem - hope so anyway as if so I might be able to sort myself. Would it be poss to attach a copy of that diagram, I'm sure that would help. Either via this link or to my main email address jim@pegasusenergy.co.uk
Regards Jim.

Hi again Larry, Still not managed to sort my steering problem. It would be very helpful if I could trouble you for a copy of the Goiot pedastal to try and see how to get to the back if the steering shaft - something is allowing the shaft to slide out and can't figure what cos I can't get inside ! My email is jim@pegasusenergy.co.uk or fax no. 0845 450 9293 Regards Jim.

Jim
Have your removed the steering compass? - you need to be careful of the compass light wires but when that is off you should be able to see the sprocket and chain, possibly the shaft is loose there?

Jim,
I take it that all is tight with the 5mm hex bolts that hold the wheel to the hub and it is the hub that does not seem linked solidly to the steering cables.
I have yet to pull my compass, but, given that the lamp in it has died, it is probably time to do that. May be able to get to it this coming weekend and see if I see any likely culprits that might contribute to your issue.
The dual aft cabin configuration makes the entire run of cables, pulleys, etc. a bit more difficult to maintain than with the "owner's version" and single aft cabin, which is our boat.
