Guys, while we were sailing in the south china sea, about 3 days out, one crew member heard a bang at night, but we couldn't really see anything. Next day we discovered a hole in the deck (thru the gelcoat) and numerous visits to the mast head didn't show anything missing. Any idea what could have caused this? Some people think it was an air bubble when laying up deck, that burst because of hull flexing (then it would be under guarantee to fix, this is why I need to have your input) What you think? Tom

It doesn't look too much like a stress fracture. Were there any pieces in or around the hole and can you post an extreme closeup of an edge to hole?

Zanshin... thanks for the reply. I tried to take another picture but my camera went dead. No there was no debris left in the morning and we didn't notice it at night.
Try to take another picture later today.
Thanks,
Tom

Looking at the ones on your website, it appears like it might have been a bubble in the gelcoat or equal, along with potentially a bolt or some other object that hit it just right and took off the top gelcoat.
Now this is my SWAG! I could be wrong, or right or ____________
