I'm planning to refinish the sole in the salon and galley of my SO42.1. Any recommendations on what product to use would be appreciated. I had planned to use "Ultimate Sole" but it appears they are no longer in business. Thanks, Jay

I heard they quit making "ultimate Sole" a yr or two ago. Then read that someone had picked up the product line?!?!? The person that mentioned that posts on a forum anything-sailing.com frequently, so you might try there.
I will admit, I a happy with my floors finish after 3 yrs of use. Not sure what I will do next time. I might have enough left over, depending upon shelf life of course! if not, then as one would say, back to the drawing board, or hope someone starts up the product again.

I did this on my old boat (Catalina 34) and used Z-spar Captain varnish. Sanded it all down carefully to bare wood with an orbital sander, because the veneer is quite thin, and then applied 5-6 coats (I seem to remember). It lasted 9 years and was still gorgeous when I sold the boat. Everyone who saw it said that it was the ideal "wet look". I read once that the pros who do this work try to lay down the varnish as quickly as possible, and I tried to do the same thing. Don't linger over brush strokes because they will flatten out on their own. Also buy the best brush you can find.
It helps to take all the pieces out of the boat, and do this at home in a basement that does not have any excess dust or dog/cat fur floating around. I would never do it in the boat.
Also, make sure you put a few coats on the edges and the bottom as well, to keep water from getting into the sole. I would do those first, before doing the top, to keep drips over the edges.

I also used Z-Spar Captains varnish on the teak sole of my old 1983 C & C 32. It lasted about 10 years before a put a few more coats on it. I hand sanded the sole while it was out of the boat. I used acetone and a little bleach to clean the oiled teak floor before I applied about 7 coats of the varnish. I wet sanded between coats. Then I wiped the dust away with acetone. I added a coat each night for 7 nights. The reason I used Z-Spar is because I once had a 14 foot cat boat with wooden spars and applied 2 to 3 coats to the spars each season and the spars always looked better than new. Happy Sailing,

This past winter in the Bahamas we visited with many cruisers on their boats. I would make a point to take a look at the floor finish in many of them and was particularly impressed with a ten year old Valiant. We had kept out boat at the marina in TX where they build them and still know several people who work there. We inquired what finish they used at the factory and found that it is Defthane Clear Satin. I found it was available at a local hardware store here in FL and ordered a few quarts. The fun will begin soon! Will post some pictures when we're done. Thanks to all for the input.
