Hi We need to remove the rudder on a friend's 36' Jeanneau - it's about 25 yrs old but don't know a model no or name. The top of the sock has a stainless/aluminium clamp block on it - about 3" by 2". and the stock appears to have dropped in this block by about 5 mm over the course of the season.
The clamp bolts have been loosened and the block spread a bit by inserting a wedge but there is a pin that appears to pass through the clamp block and the stock although the pin looks to have been driven in from both sides. How do we get the clamp block off to drop the rudder? Does this pin pass all the way through or is it a cunning design! Bearing in mind the stock appears to have dropped the pin may be broken or very worn.
Any help and advice very welcome.
Bryan

Not sure if this will help you at all, but here is a link to a Sunshine 36/38. The link says 38, but there were some 36' models with out the filled in transom sugar scoop. If you have a Sun Rise also produced about the same time frame, I can not find an owners manual for it. BUT, the setup is probably really similar. Hopefully the page with the rudder info will be what you need. I have had my rudder/tiller etc off my 85 Arcadia, but someone else did the work to know how to do this. www.jeanneau.fr/doc/proprietaire/manuelproprietaire_2_20080305_Manuel_ang_Sun_Shine.pdfMarty

I have a JOD 35 and the rudder stock design sounds the same. I remove the block by driving the pin out, if it is stuck you might have to fashion a puller to get it moving, be sure to have the rudder supported from below so there isn't ANY weight on the block. Once you have the pin and block removed you can drop the rudder if it hasn't become stuck in the bearing, Which is common with the plastic type of bearing. On many boats the problem then becomes having enough vertical clearance to remove the rudder and stock from the boat. Measure first! Jim

Thanks Marty & Jim Couldn't find any info on the rudder on the link Marty - seemed more like an owners user guide rather than a workshop manual. Are there other docs on that site I could search through - as I couldn't seem to get to an index or directory page?
Jim - you've confirmed that it is a single pin passing though the rudder stock, as we hoped. Our concern is that the pin has sheared, worn or bent. We only need to get the clamp block off to investigate this, and hopefully won't need to drop th rudder from the boat - as currently there isn't enough room!
Thanks guys

Whilst the top part of the JOD35 may be similar, see (scroll to almost last photo) www.jeanneau-owners.com/hintsandtips/RudderbearingJOD35.html that rudder is an unsupported spade, if the boat is a SunShine or SunRise then it my also have a lower bearing attached to the skeg. Agree important to take weight off the rudder before trying to drive out the pin - some judicious use of localised heat on the support may help break the seal Malcolm

Hi Malcolm - top block is similar to the photo butI would guess a bit meatier, about 50mm x 75mm with 2 clamp bolts at the front and a tiller hinge bolt at the rear. I should have taken a photo of it yesterday. The boat is a 1985 Jeanneau Selection 36 (or 37 with the scoop fitted.)
Cheers Bryan

Malcolm, Glad you got the Jeanneau.fr link to work, it would stall out on me. Then again, maybe coming from the usa site was screwing me up. I could get a link to a manual on the dutch site with an english manual. Here is page for those that have not seen that site, with the 27 boats of info they have. www.jeanneauforum.nl/site/content/jeanneaudocumentatieMarty
