Our windlass stopped working. The led on the control box above does not turn on. It is supposed to be on once the engine is running. directly applying power to the solenoid, the windlass works. We are not sure what this control box is, but we believe it is the relay that prevents windlass operating without engine running. It has a fuse on it, and the fuse is ok. Also, we do measure 12v arriving to the box. we suspect the box does not see the engine is running. any ideas what this box is, and what may be wrong?

Hi dbbd!
The box that you refer to is made by SCHEIDER please see pics below. You may also find one around your engine compartment too so try swopping to prove functionality. As a note I have contacted Ian Scott at spares@clarkeandcater.co.uk regarding these too. And still awaiting reply!! The picture you provided does show another issue "WATER" its very damp where the windlass control is situated as I can also see a tide line and perhaps day light coning though a hole possible though to the anchor chain bin. I too did have water ingress into the Fore cabin This turned out to be coming from the aft pushpit fixings. I'm in the process of sorting this currently and will post how I solved the issue.
Hope all goes well

PS. I should point out that all of mine work fine I contacted Ian in regard to a spare aboard.

Hi Again
sorry forgot to say that you may want to check the output from your alternator.

If the system turns on when the engine is on I would check to see if the wire sending signal to the windlass control from the engine control is getting voltage.

Thanks for the advise. The Sheiber box is indeed gone. We currently connected the minus directly to the solenoid, so we do not have engine on protection. We will replace the sheiber box with a relay that will provide the same protection. The alternator signal arrived fine. As to the picture, there is no dampness or tide line. Probably lighting issue. There is a hole to the anchor since we are replacing the windlass controller and cable. Of course it will be sealed. In that opportunity we also added an RF remote control
