Just had the winter service done on my 40hp 3JH4-E engine
The service engineer reminded me that you can get false readings on the dip stick as there can be air pressure build up as the dip stick hole is also used to pump out old oil
I had noticed in the season that on checking the oil level that none showed on the dip=stick, loosening the filler cap allowed the system to rebalance and show a correct reading
Think this may be common to other newer Yanmar models

With my engine you are supposed to check ten minutes after shut down from running. I am guessing that's the same for all the newer Yanmars?

Malcolm, many thanks for the update on the oil dipstick. I as well have the Yanmar 3JH and the in the my first year I was agast with no oil reading. Now into third year I play with the dipstick for a couple of days and have thought perhaps the dipstick with no oil adherance was a chemical issue with oil and dipstick metal. Now we know better and I will play with equalizing the sump pressure to confirm a hopefully accurate reading. Cheers and happy holidays to all.

Hello Malcom. The issues with the oil readings are related more to the pressure build up in the dipstick tube. While the engine is running air gets into the dipstick tube. Because the dipstick tube is at the bottom of the oil pan this air cannot escape, (the top of the dipstick is well sealed). All you need to do is remove the dipstick and reinsert it and you will find the correct level readings.

On my 4JH3e it seems like the only way I can get an accurate reading is to remove the dip stick and the oil fill cap and wait a few minutes for it to equalize. I generally check the oil when it's cold after it has been sitting for a week or more. I do not have an operators manual so I am glad Malcolm pointed this out. Thanks!
