Hi Since it was so cold in NY, I decided to fie up the heat gun today and stripped the old, god awfull dark brown finish off of the stairs. The non slip tape adhesive left the wood discolored. Any tips or tricks to get the tape stains off of the wood? Thanks in advance!

I would plan on replacing the non-slip tape, since it's very useful. With the correct placement, you probably won't notice the original discoloration.

A good dual action sander (with vacuum attachment) will remove the stains, 80 grit disc to start, and then 120 and 240 grit, , but as suggested, non slip is going to be required, one fall slipping off a companionways step can spoil your sailing for ages, so I second Dons advice.
The steps look good, must attack mine one day.

I set the gun to about 740 degrees and the finish came off quick with just a putty knife. No sanding at all. The dark brown step color seems to make the steps so much more noticeable. Its a lot easier on the eyes in a lighter color. IMHO. Agreed, nonslip is a requirement, however I am exploring my options. Considering a Seadek teak and holly or similar EVA foam material or a varnish with non slip additive, but we will see. Not sure which direction I will take but I have some time to decide, since it's still so cold. I really can't do much with this until the temp gets above 50f. For those of you that have done this, which direction did you ultimately go? What are you guys doing with your cockpit tables? Semco teak sealer? Cetol? Varnish? Cheers!

You might also look at Kiwigrip or Petits Tuff Coat. Both are a rubber style non skid. Apply this over the flat part of the steps, you can then make the non skid area bigger than what you have. In my case, it is 2-3 times larger in area with Kiwi Grip, and much nicer going up and down the stairs.
