I have a 2023 NC795 with the Garmin GPSmap 1223 xsv and the Yamaha CL5-1 engine instrument/autopilot I command link plus. With my current setup I can only use heading or course hold on the autopilot panel. It is not connected to the Garmin GPSmap so I can’t have the boat track a route. The only open cable input on the CL5-1 is a USB and I have an NMEA backbone with an empty (yellow) t-connector that I could replace with a non-dummy connector. Can I buy an NMEA 2000 to USB cable and tap into the network so the autopilot and engine instrumentation shows on the Garmin screen? Any input is appreciated. Update!! Yamaha to Garmin cable part number 010-12770-00 is the ticket. Goes from the J1939 port on the Garmin 1223 to the Yamaha bus bar

Thanks for the info, I'd love to have auto pilot in my NC795. But my waters are often choppy. Can it handle 2-3 foot seas?

The autopilot most likely can, and most likely the boat can, too. The question is can YOU handle 2 to 3 footers. I generally cancel if there's a chance of 3 footers and don't like 2s. But been in 6 footers and that's down right scary, even in a bigger boat.

In San Francisco Bay 2 - 3 foot seas are normal with wind over 15 knots. Been doing it for 20 years starting with my 16 foot Boston Whaler Dauntless donning full foul weather gear and booties. We learn if you dont want to get slammed you go slow and tack in and out of the wind. Triples the distance but makes the journey much more relaxing. :-) I've been in even larger seas going to Duxbury Reef off Stinson Beach but even with that experience still respect/fear the ocean.
When in 2 - 3 foot boiling sea I am hyper adjusting the steering. That's why I wonder if autopilot can handle it.
