Hey, We own a Jeanneau Cap Camarat 8.5CC - and heavily upgraded her (better electronics, sonar(s), and fancy battery switch system) + fixed a lot of the "Jeanneau" standard issues related to build quality. But we want to get back into sailboats - so on our shortlist currently is a used Jeanneau Yacht 51 or something smaller until we are ready to sail "full time" The CC is in Spain where we spend holidays and we live on the UK South Coast. Me: Electronics Engineering background / sailing all my life. Anything from dinghy to sailing yachts and motorboats. Feel free to ask Marine Electronics questions if you have issues. Extensive Navico experience - reasonable Ray/Garmin experience. When I get annoyed or happy with something - I tend to write about it - so contribute to some Marine blogs. /kaz

The JY 51 looks a wonderful boat, but out of our price range...Where in Spain to you keep your Cap Camaret? We used to be in Valencia and have visited many of the coastal harbours.
One quick question on electronicsyou might help with is our Raymarine Paddlewheel on out ST60+, made my Airmar, like most systems is always fouling up. Just wondering if it would be sensible, or not to buy a new one, then cut it off and join the wires with those small self sealing solder joiners, rather than have to feed the wire all the way back through the bilge to the connection box and instrument? You thoughts would be most welcome. Good luck on the boat hunt, always exciting! Malcolm

Malcolm: My knotmeter transducer failed a couple of years ago, and the Airmar technician told me to do exactly as you said. Cut the wires and join them to the new unit with waterproof butt splices. Just make sure you leave quite a bit of slack, and keep the joint well supported and out of the wet part of the bilge.

You thoughts would be most welcome. Good luck on the boat hunt, always exciting! Malcolm You can anti-foul the wheels - that helps. But you have to use "transducer paint" - so a water based paint. Make certain only to apply a very thin layer evenly - I would take normal transducer paint and thin to 1/4 (3 part water - 1 part transducer paint). Take it out when you are not on the move for more than 1-2 weeks dependent on where you are. It is probably in a P617 fairing. If your mount is OLDER without water inrush limiter... Exchange it at next haul out. They should be "compatible" with P617 or later. Over time save up for a NMEA 2000 version - the new ones with square wheels are MUCH better and a bit more resistant to fouling. The problem with old ST versions is a lot of the processing is done in the display. The newer models does everything "internally" so you are not limited to the 1-3 updates per second from ST60+ AND you can calibrate the speed to show "almost" correct on both tack legs. We have the CC8.5 in Sotogrande. But our berth fits a JY 51...
