I have a weird problem with my Yanmar 4JH5 from 2011, appr. 1000 h, well serviced every year.
Approximately a year ago I found some quantities of greenish liquid below my engine. I couldn't identify any specific leakage and cleaned up everything to trace whatever would follow - but nothing followed. Therefore I assumed that the oil was some remaining stuff after the engine service that had been done by a service company in spring time. For a longer while nothing happened although I carefully controlled the oil situation below the engine.
In this spring time the saildrive seal had been renewed. After the next longer trip I found again bigger quantities of, as it seems, gear oil. Also the level of the gear oil was down. I refilled and made it safely back to the harbour.
Now my service company made a careful check, 3 hours running engine but no obvious leckage exept some small quantities at the oil lid. They changed the seal of the lid and made another 3 hrs trial, half of it se trial, and they didn't find anything anymore.
I don't trust that this is the end of the story. I expect to find oil again after a longer trip. Did anyone experience something like that and is there a specific thing I could look at?
:-(

Hello wolferich,
The only time I have seen green liquid under my engine is when the coolant water cap was removed and the overflowing coolant ran down the side of the engine and dripped under the sump.
Regards,
Trevor

I was convinced until now that it is gear oil from the saildrive. I attach a photo from underneath the engine. It is coming from somewhere deeper in but I couldn’t really trace it until now.

Hi - the green oil does look a lot like the specialist oil used in the SD50 saildrive unit.
I too have a SO439 from 2012. I used to have a SD50 saildrive but knowing its unreliability I changed it for a SD60 soon after buying the boat in 2018 - the SD60 uses the same oil as the engine. But I do remember the green coloured drive oil which the SD50 used.
It could be a failed seal on the saildrive input drive shaft, so coming out from the bell housing on the rear of the engine?
