Decided recently to do my own servicing and am a bit confused re type of oil for gear box.
According to original documentation the gear box is HS45A and appears to use Automatic Transmission Fluid - but a "knowledgeable" person is saying it should be 75/90 TYPE 5 - Can anybody shed any light on this please?

I don’t recognise the transmission HS45A, and you say “according to original documentation” ………. could the transmission have been changed by a previous owner? … your knowledgeable person may be correct …… or wrong. Some transmissions use ATF some use gear oils, some use the same multi grade oil as the engine.
Firstly identify the actual transmission make and model from its case work or identity label , google it, and you should get the answer you seek.
Putting the wrong lube in could cost you quite a lot .
Hope a learned forum member recognises the transmission, and comes along soon for you.
A good thing to be able to do your own servicing, it’s not rocket science but wants to be done well, and good to research anything in doubt.

Thanks for the response - I hadn't considered that they could have been replaced...the HS45A number comes from the Volvo Penta warranty registration card. I'll have a look if the serial numbers on the unit match the card next time I'm at the boat.
Many thanks for your input

The replacement idea is probably not likely ….. but I consider all things possible. You might find a Volvo Penta agent could help, especially as you have all the serial numbers.
Good luck CB
