Not sure if anybody is following the story from Germany: Last week a 410 Sun Odyssey sank in the Baltic Sea. The owners were rescued and the cost guard also recovered the boat. Turns out the retractable bow thruster caused the sinking because it was not properly installed. Jeanneau apparently did not laminate the device - is was only glued in. Jeanneau has not yet responded to the incident - which in not surprising. The big question for us owners of the same model, and probably all other models who have the retractable bow thruster is if this is a one off or if we are also impacted by this. From our experience with Jeanneau we doubt that they will ever contact customers who fall into this group. We also wonder how to order a replacement if our bow thruster falls off without Jeanneau’s spare part department This is the link to the German sailing magazin Die Yacht

That is a serious problem, no wonder Jeanneau is staying silent on the matter. I read the German article, which contained more detail than I'd expected.
On a less serious note, when it comes to pieces of boat falling off, here's an old classic:

On a less serious note, when it comes to pieces of boat falling off, here's an old classic: Jeanneau are investigating as one might expect and have put out a warning/inspection report to dealers immediately and will be issuing a press statement next week. At least the owners were able to safely evacuate. Malcolm

Yikes! Makes me wonder how the retractable sternthruster in my J57 was installed? Next time on the boat I'll give that a very thourough investigation!

That is frightening. Will be double checking my bow thruster when we haul out later this year. Do we know if the boat in question had the bow thruster installed by the factory or was it installed later?

It sounds like a factory installed bow thruster. Our boat is still on the hard - boating season has not yet started in Michigan. We will disassemble the bow thruster to check how it was installed. We contacted our dealer on Saturday and he was surprised by the news and had not heard about it before. He is working with us and we will not go into the water without having fully ensured it is safe. We checked the installation manual and it clearly instructs to have the flange laminated. We have not yet found any statements from Jeanneau - neither in German or English. The least thing they could do is to communicate with customers who feel they are impacted by this - we have the same model boat! But through the newsletter they only send videos of you-tube personalities….

I have just received this statement from Jeanneau:
Jeanneau has been informed of an incident on March 24, 2023, that resulted in the sinking of a 2021-built Sun Odyssey 410 off the coast of Schönberg, Germany. Fortunately, the owner and his wife on board were rescued thanks to the quick intervention of DGzRS, the Baltic Sea Rescue Service.
· Jeanneau teams intend to conduct a thorough inspection of the salvaged boat as soon as possible to determine the precise causes of this isolated event. We will keep our dealers and customers informed of the outcome of this investigation.
· At this stage, no link has been established between this incident and the recall campaign initiated on March 1, 2023, to reinforce the bonding of retractable bow thruster modules in the hulls of Sun Odyssey 410, 440 and 490 equipped with this option and produced in 2021 and 2022.
· Because the safety of our boats is an absolute priority, and as a precautionary measure, we wanted to strengthen the bow thruster flange on these hulls to prevent the occurrence of seepage, without any identified risk of water ingress.
· For a month now, the list of the concerned hull numbers has been sent to the dealers so that they can contact their clients to organize this work.
· The information operations undertaken with the owners in this context will continue over the next few weeks.

I'm negatively impressed by the way Jeanneau handles a recall campaign. Providing a list of affected boats to the dealers and hoping they manage to contact their customers regarding a potentially life threatening problem is not the best way of handling issues like that. At the position in question of the baltic the SAR network is quite dense but that could have happened at a different position...

At the position in question of the baltic the SAR network is quite dense but that could have happened at a different position... I certainly don't disagree. The Baltic rescue team did very well in what could do easily be a terminal situation. The water temperature was approximately only about 5 degrees... I am just passing on the Jeanneau statement. Interesting that they say this is a 2021 and 2022 issue. I wonder if this has anything to do with shifting work back to France after shutting down the South Carolina factory. Our boat was delivered in 2020 and one of the last built in South Carolina.
Goggoll, what year is your 410? Where was it built? Please share what you find when you do your inspection.

Our new boat has been impacted by this recall. On its first launch there was a leak discovered. It is now getting a further repair. I have to say Jeanneau have been very good indeed. Our boat is a new 440.

Our boat was built in France in Spring 2021. What is frustrating for us is that we had a boat built in South Carolina in 2019 which was so poorly built and had a major manufacturer defect that we returned it to Jeanneau after one season. That’s why we have the current boat. We would not have bought another boat built in the US. The main reason why we have a Jeanneau is our dealer who takes care of everything perfectly. Jeanneau doesn’t do anything. As you can imagine our trust in Jeanneau is at a low point. I keep the group posted what we find out when inspecting our bow truster. The German magazine also published the statement from Jeanneau today. So a bow thruster that sinks to the bottom of the sea and a recall for incorrectly installed bow thrusters is no related….

Goggoll, I am sorry to hear that. Interestingly your experience is the exact opposite of ours. We had all sorts of problems with the dealer and Jeanneau has been great.
Hope the bow thruster checks out okay. We have not had any leaks so we are probably fine, but will certainly check it when we haul out.

Our new 410 is one identified with an issue. We have never launched the boat. That was to happened this week, but a no go. Not sure of the mechanics of this issue - not sure what laminating even means - but will this fix the problem? I am completely disappointed in spending all this money only to have something I consider pretty major happen. Thanks!

I just want to give the group an update. Our dealer got the details of the recall after he contacted Jeanneau. He did not get any information about hull numbers involved. But on our boat you can see how poorly the thruster is installed and obviously not to specs of the manufacturer. In addition our boat was built in exactly the same time frame as the boat that went down. Jeanneau’s fixing instructions are a cheep solution for this problem and we are in agreement with our dealer that this is not enough. We take the whole thing out and follow the bow thruster manufacturers installation instruction with putting sheets of fiber glass around the flange. On this beautiful Easter Sunday you might enjoy the video of the sinking boat…it goes down pretty fast with a hole like that in the bow! You have to copy the link into your browser - I don’t get an actual link to work. www.yacht.de/special/seenot/seenot-untergang-der-jeanneau-von-santiano-musiker-pete-sage-im-video

The problem seems to be related to the installation of Side Power / Sleipner bow thruster flange. Jeanneau used Quick thrusters earlier, which have exactly the same flange. It is difficult to understand why the boats produced in 2019 and 2020 are not being recalled. Did they change the installation procedure in the factory while switching from one brand to another? Complete disappointment!

To Goggoll....I'm curious, do you remember your hull number of the boat that was built in South Carolina that you returned? We're having issues with our boat, also made in South Carolina in the first year of production, and have had nothing but headaches dealing with our dealer since the purchase, very poorly constructed boat when you consider it's a half a million dollars Canadian for us.

Hi SST,
unfortunately I do not remember the hull number of the boat from South Carolina.
At least we are lucky that our dealer is a great guy.
Hope you get your issues fixed.
