SO43DS - refurbishing the hatches

Hi all
the main saloon hatch leaks from the solar fan, I will replace the plexiglass panel but will not install a solar fan again, and I would like to take advantage and refurbish the full frame also.
I was wondering if anyone has painted/refurbished the metal frames. and if so, what material/paint is recommended
