Considering purchase of NC 795 Sport...and wondering where/what/how the best placement of downrigger would be?
- Boat has narrow gunwale and rails ….reading about possible mounts on the rail? or in rod holder?

I cant give you the answer as my boat is not the sport version, but I can highly recommend you do not use the road holder mount. The pressure applied by the downrigger ball is quite significant, and can crack the fiberglass around the rod holder if you are not careful. For my boat,I reinforced the mount with a plate that goes between a rail and the gun whale. Be careful with this decision as a bad install could damage your fiberglass gunwhale.

Hi Dave, welcome to the forum. Howesounder is spot on about not using the rod holder gimbal mount for your down rigger. That was recommended to me by the dealer and the first time I hit the retrieve button on the downrigger I heard a big crack and almost lost the downrigger overboard (Btw, the dealer did repair the crack at the rod holder.  ). I then looked for a better solution and ended up using the Scotty side mounts given there isn’t much of a gunwale, but given the Sport has a different configuration I don’t see where you would mount it around the fold down seats. Its interesting the Sport is specifically setup for fishing but it doesn’t appear to have a good location for the downrigger mount. I’d follow up with the dealer as to what they recommend. So now I’m going suggest an option against what I just said about rod holder mount. This option is from Burnwiin and they make a reinforced rod holder mount that can handle downrigger stress. A friend of mine has an 895 he runs as a fishing charter and he installed the Burnwiin and it works great with no issues, so I’d look at this as an option. He is running Cannon downrigger, but they also have mounts for Scotty. www.burnewiin.com/product-list I know there are few folks on the forum with Sport versions (795 and 895), so maybe they would have some idea’s as well. I put aluminum plates under the gunnel and A
Delron block on the top that I mounted the bernwin mounts to. Very solid with zero flex.
