A standard SO39i is equipped with Harken genoa lead cars with pin stops The pin stop is adjustable to use it as a stop or to disable it. I would like to make the genoa lead cars adjustable like the SO39i Performance has. I mean adjustable from the cockpit. Anyone there to show me how this is done on other 39i's?

I’ve just had a look at our Genoa car set up on our 45DS.
We have both pawl set and cockpit adjustable Genoa lead Cars.
To add cockpit controlled Cars you’d need to work out the size of the track, then buy the appropriate Genoa Car lead blocks and a set of track end control blocks. Don’t forget the cam cleat outboard of the cockpit and a pair of control ropes. I guess your boat is “midrange” i.e. 27mm.
To control our 55m2 Genoa we have 2:1 Cars.
The cam cleats on Affinity are outboard of the cockpit. I’d use plywood backing plates say 12mm.
I’m guess the hardwear from Harken and other bits will be about £600.
I can take some photos and email to if you send me an email address by PM.

The topic is "genoa lead cars with pin stops" not cleats. No holes drilled. Suggest you go on Garhaurer website and look at the E-Z Glide 3 with Swivel Jams. I'll be on the boat tomorrow and will take a picture

Oh you used Garhauer. I thought you did it with the stock Harken hardware.
I don't find Garhauer to be very nice looking, but if I can find a way to do it with Harken...!
Ian,
It looks like you have the same Genoa car I do. Does it slide under load at all, or can you only adjust unloaded?

Harken has roller bearing cars that as noted, should be a take off on end, slide old car out, , install new one. Installed new end with 2 or four to one end parts. May need to drill a hole or two. An afternoon should be a me time to do this! Well worth doing.

Ian, It looks like you have the same Genoa car I do. Does it slide under load at all, or can you only adjust unloaded? Zaphod, Basically our cars do not slide under load. When lightly load there is some movement. This is ok because when the car is between the stop it’s only the friction that prevents movement. Also, Garhauer Marine do make cleats that fit on to the track if you need something like that. Check out their web site. You can change to all Harken adjustable hard-wear. If you have Harken track then you just unscrew the forward end stop, slide on the adjustable car, fit the new forward end stop with block rig the adjusting line and that’s it done. Don’t forget the cam cleat at the cockpit. You just spent about £600. With Garhauer Marine you spend $400 plus shipping. Over to you, Ian

Ian,
Even though we have adjustable cars (and unlike our last boat) we are unable to adjust them forwards against a sail under load. A bit of disappointment that we have to turn into the wind to reduce the load, then pull them forward to a point beyond where we think they should be, allowing them to ease slowly back to the right spot. In short not a quick sail trim!
I am guessing you might have the same problem with that big head sail on your boat.
Is the boat new to you by the way? I thought you had an older 40DS??

Alenka, Same boat as always. Can’t afford another one on a pension. If we need to change the car position we release the sheet (not often that worried about it as we are lazy sailors) and sail on the main while adjusting the car. Reasonable quick and no change of direction. Ian

You need to change the track, which isnt a big deal. The new track has the same bolt spacing as the T-track, and isnt that expensive. What IS expensive is the ball bearing Genoa cars at over $700 each! Garhauer definitely has the value pricing.

Zaphod,
Hence why many go with Garhaur Carr's. I'm attempting, 10 years later, still using non bearing carrs, that I converted to line pull. We release the sheet a bit, not losing all steam and can pull the carr forward. Downwind way easier than up wind!

On our SO34.2, I acquired Harken blocks that mounted to the front end of the fairlead track and brought the lead back to a cam cleat mounted to the outside of the cockpit coaming on each side. That worked well to adjust the fairlead car position, at a modest cost. When we acquired our SO40, I installed the Garhauer system, which has been good, though sometimes the integrated cam cleat at the track rear gets stuck at an offset angle and one must go out on the side deck to re-orient it.
