After hurricane Irma left the BVI devastated and destroyed many boats, I was uncertain as to the fate of my Jeanneau 57, "Zanshin". Although she was tied down on the hard at Nanny Cay she toppled like a domino with the rest of the boats and the pictures of devastation that came from the BVI after the storms were bleak.
There were a number of problems with the yard, and despite my best attempts the yard didn't lift "Zanshin" from her side until late March of last year and due to business commitments I was unable to visit her until now. For that reason I've been silent on the forum - but that will change now.
"Zanshin" lost her rig (well, half of the mast is still there) and all of the deck hardware (stanchions, pushpit, pulpit, etc.) is broken or bent. The boom is unscathed but there are 2 holes in the hull below the waterline which were caused by the stands when she toppled over.
My big worry was that either of the two diesel tanks (1000l in total) leaked or that water ingress through broken hatches would have made the insides inhabitable but when I finally got aboard a couple of days ago I was amazed to see that there was no water ingress and no damage below! Some cushions got loose and skidded across and the stuff on my work table had fallen, but apart from that everything was in order... even all my glassware and single malts and plates survived!
I'll post some pictures when I can, in the next couple of days I'm volunteering for the BVI Spring Regatta and have some mails out regarding quotes for new rigging and deck hardware. I hope that Jeanneau gets back to me...
