They open very easily, by turning the ring holding the lens a quarter turn clockwise, I believe.
I replaced the bulbs a long time ago, and I'm sure that you could find more appropriate bulbs now. They have two wire leads, not a socket of any kind. Take one bulb out of the fixture and measure it. I'm sure you can find what you're looking for on the web.

The more I think about it, the more I think maybe it's a quarter turn counter-clockwise. But the concept is still the same, and I'm sure you will be successful.
