I am trying to decide where to store my second anchor. I know that weight in the bow is not desirable but not sure how much difference really in a 20,000 lb boat. Fortress F37, 21 pounds, with 40 ft chain and 200 ft rope about 100 pounds total. I have room in a lazarette but this Fortress is unwieldy. My primary is a 44 lb delta with 100 ft chain and 200 rope. Sun Odyssey 469 Advice?

The 36i has a deep cockpit locker at the stern where we keep our secondary, which is not frequently used (storms, mostly). A 30 lb galvanized Danforth with just 25' of chain, and 250' of rope, it's still a challenge to extract it for use even with a large dedicated boat bag holding all the chain and the rode; it helps to avoid damage to the locker, the deck, etc., but it is two heavy items to be lifted from an awkward location (kind of need 4 hands).

I do a fair amount of anchoring with two hooks, we have some tight canyon-type anchorages in my cruising area. I have the same setup as ForGrinsToo. I epoxied a small fitting onto the hull inside my lazarette. The anchor drops straight into it. The rode goes into a large bucket which is lowered into the same locker via a line attached to the handle. I only have 150' of rode and maybe 25' of chain on the stern anchor so it all fits into one bucket. I'd prefer 300' of stern rode but I don't feel like adding a second bucket to the system. It's not fun working with the stern anchor but the system works.
If you want pictures of the setup, let me know.

Thanks. The F37 anchor seems huge for 21 pounds. It fit, barely in a Lazarrette but I like the idea of using one of the aft compartments instead. Will see how it fits. Thanks.

Just for fun, here's a picture of my boat hanging on two hooks. You can see why you don't want to swing in one of these anchorages!

I have a large fortress anchor as a spare and stow it in the aft cockpit locker on a SO33. I have 200ft of multiplat rope (does not kink) spliced into 20ft of chain which stored in a laundry basket (chain on top) so it can be rinsed of and drains before putting in the locker, the anchor is kept unshackled from the chain to facilitate getting it in and out as much easier on its own and have foam pipe insulation on the fortresses bars at the base of the flukes which make comfortable hand holds and protects the fibre glass when moving it about. Once in the locker the anchor is clipped to the top of the basket with bungy cord. Also bits of the pipe insulation can be wedged between the shank and flukes to stop the flukes from moving when getting it in and out of the locker.

I'd been thinking of a polyethylene shelf as a support. Ian's pipe insulation idea is also something we''ll adapt. Right now, we drape an old towel over the shank. And we're using a large canvas boatbag instead of a laundry basket or bucket. That anchorage looks a little familiar. Geoff

Great picture! I am going to see how it fits in the aft storage area behind the wheels, one are on either side of the genset. If it fits well there I can see about building a shelf and or hanger for it. Should be easy to clean at bow wash down or aft shower I guess. In most of my travel areas I don’t expect to use it often. All ideas are appreciated.

Yes, I would like to see how you mounted the anchor in that locker. Hi Geoff. I fabricated a base out of a piece of StarBoard. I epoxied some teak tabs into the locker and screwed the base to the tabs. Here you can see how the anchor fits into the base. When I designed this I actually fabricated another piece to capture the shank but I found that once the locker is filled with the usual junk the shank is pretty effectively pinned in place. And finally you can see how the rode nestles in a bucket next to the anchor. The black line is used to pull the bucket up out of the locker because it's quite a stretch to get down there. Usually there's a bunch of other junk piled on top of it all. Let me know if there's something about this that's not clear. David

Our main anchor on the bow roller is a Rocna 25kg with 300’ all chain + a second Delta (not 100% sure of the size) secured in the forward anchor locker (see picture). We have a Fortress mounted on the lower port side rails of our arch using a Mantus anchor bracket (Mantus Bracket). We use 25’ chain and 250’ rode in the aft locker mesh bag. Some non-mooring anchorages in SoCal require fore & aft anchoring, so that’s about the only time we use it. We also have a 300’ tape reel but that seems to be used more for toys than anchoring.

I especially like the reminders inside the locker.
