Curious what oil others are using to replace the obsolete API CD recommended in the Yanmar manual. Looks like CD was replaced by CF-4, which is now also obsolete. Is CI-4 or CH-4 a recommended replacement?

Use the most recent version. I do that with my boat which is an 85. my bobcat a 99, track hoe a 98, IHC dumptruck which is a 92. Even did so on my now sold 96 and 05 GM pickups with diesels.....
I do like Chevron delo personally. SHell rotella has a strong following.....I have to admit, did not understand the "rosmella" comments until my boat came with some shell oil, I put it in the boat motor and held my finners to my nose!! Well any way......I'm sure it is a good oil, but the smell now that I know it is true, keeps me from using it vs Delo!

I agree that Chevron Delo is the oil to use with a Yanmar 4JH3, although mine is a 4JH3-TE. I have used the Chevron Delo for the fourteen seasons that I have owned the boat which I purchased new in 2002, although it is a model 2003. The engine remains in almost pristine condition, but I try to change the oil and oil filter after about 200 hours and every fall and spring.
