Talking of software coding, I'm thinking of buying a Raspberry Pi to get familiar with coding on it. Then I'll think about some boat projects for it. Maybe for logging power usage or logging NMEA data. I know some people run OpenCPN on the Pi and last night I was playing around with it on my Mac and found that there's a Polars logging plugin, so maybe a Pi to run OpenCPN and create Polars. Perhaps in the long term it could be interesting to create the polars and then display a percentage for my current performance against the polar performance. For this winter, I'll be just happy to familiarise myself with the Pi and the coding.
BTW Malta is 100% on my hit list when going west next year. Never been there but I should go there as my Father was born there.

Mike Thats great send me a email to : vt@b2net.net. and we can duscus - we may find other things working together Hi MickyB and Vasko If you have any ideas on how we can better sort a simple way of making photo attachments on this forum I am sure we would all be most grateful. Thanks Malcolm I have tried to upload a photo showing the exact area but it keeps being rejected by the site despite being well under the 1mb limit. Yes we have now reached the free storage limit for attachments, and pro-boards charge a lot for more storage space and I want to keep this forum free, I guess like the majority of users More info on this, plus other options are detailed at: jeanneau.proboards.com/thread/8029/revised-guidance-photo-uploads-forum

personally I store the pictures on my own server and put only the links to them in the posts - but there are many ither ways - inuding free onces lime : google drive or postimage.organother way if you put a server in you garage and run the forum there and you will control the space etc ... but you will need to admistrate it etc... the problem is that I do not have a perfect advice . every option has trade-off. at this stage best option is google drive or anither free storage every other solution will be a killer complicated or temporary...

Hoppy, Rospbery is great but it some kind of computer replacment e.g. I will just go fir Surface 4 Pro for example for hardware projects Arduino is the way to go - it is crazy easy and really using the best possible option for CPU currently on the - ATMEL , and programing for is very easy ... and cost is 2-5 usd

Below is a recent comment / request I made albeit, buried in another thread - the Postimage app does have rather "tasteless adverts" Thanks Malcolm Yes we have now reached the free storage limit for attachments, and pro-boards charge a lot for more storage space and I want to keep this forum free, I guess like the majority of users But you can still add an image to your post - just use the button "Add image to post" which is on the left side below the post menu bar. This does have some tasteless adverts which I don't like, if any techies can come up with an alternative I would be grateful More info on this, plus other options are detailed at: jeanneau.proboards.com/thread/631/adding-image-post-new-procedureWell,, We know Malcoms winter project......unfortunately it does not have to do with the boat! Fewer projects than last year, but ...
a. Replace analog waterspeed sensor with NMEA2K depth-speed-temp sensor (thru-hull done already) b. Lower seawater strainer basket (so it doesn't obstruct Duo-Charge unit and cap comes off easier) c. Replace fridge mechanicals to enlarge freezer section and use thru-hull heat dissipation (Admiral requirement) d. Remove & replace nav station main wood panel (due to retirement of radar display and gaping hole) e. Replace autopilot computer, install controllers at each helm f. Complete NMEA2K instrumentation installation (2 more display instruments) g. Relocate dual Racor primary filters for better access f. Refinish fiddle in galley (maybe, if I have time)

Extra house batteries.
Ian Ian, we bought a FeatherStream last year and it really is good. We are in conversation with Darglow for a new cassette to give a bit more astern grunt. It's an FOC change. Ian

We have little to do in fact: New shaft cutter, replace Standing rigging, re-cut head sail and main, Replace watermaker ssensor, Repair overhaul both outboards, buy New Dingy, Engine maintanace, convert one head to washer/dryer, rebuild folding prop, replace tv, update the charts, bottom paint, replace All the canvas, redue the hawspipe, repack the liferaft, all the other stuff I forgot on this list! Not bad after 20,000 ocean miles and 5 years at sea! After all it's just Money! dilligaf -- understand fully - nice list -- we do a bit of work every year but it builds and yea as the sea miles and years build it gets a bit more expensive each year. We just passed 8 years and over 30,000nm - and yea it is money but one of limited quantity things we have.

Ian That's good to hear Ian, I did quite a bit of reading up on the various options. The Feather Stream was the one that I think suits our needs. Darglow are also very helpful, that goes a long way for me. Just have to get the old one off and get taper details to them. Ian

My winter project is getting aboard the boat and sailing around the warm waters of the Caribbean until the weather in Europe warms up again. p.s. I've been coding the Arduino for a while now and agree that it is the easiest way to get going with controlling and measuring the real world. Once I get back aboard I'll beta-test my refrigeration control and energy saving system in the real world; that is based on the Atmel processors and started life as an Arduino.

My winter project is to install some LED light strips in the forward cabin of Anwen. I've bought a reel of LEDs that I'm going to fit to the underside of the shelves to provide some downlight onto the bunk that I hope will make it a bit more welcoming and less dingy. I've also got some red LED lights for the saloon for night sailing that will be installed at low level.

This year........ purely precautionary, remove fuel tank, fit two inspection hatches a give it a clean out. (it's currently in the dinning room after being steam cleaned 5 times!!) - Mrs Ianqv is not happy!!! I'm pleased to say that after 14 years of use it was very clean inside. The only contamination was what looked like a handful of fine grit in the bottom of the tank. Tank being fitted back in this weekend (much to Mrs Ianqv's delight!!!). I'll try and upload some pics Regards Ian

Oh ok..... pics to follow I pumped the old diesel out into cans. As there was no contamination I just plan to filter the fuel (using one of these filter funnels) when I pour in back in. 99% of the time I fill from cans anyway (with fuel purchased from the local petrol station). It's just as cheap as Marina fuel as they jack their prices up even if you do use a 60/40 split. However, the main reason I try and fill from cans is to ensure the quality of diesel going into my tank. Yes - red diesel is the same fuel.... but just dyed red. However, I am more concerned over how some small marina's keep their diesel and at this time of year (winter), the diesel in their tanks is just sitting there! I've also never heard of anyone getting a diesel bug from using "petrol station" fuel. Of course it is still possible, but I think the chances of picking up a bug are vastly reduced. Regards Ian

Ian - my concern was that mariners might have a problem with biodiesel in road fuel?
Copying from Seapower Marine's website: "Road fuel contains a proportion of biodiesel which is not good for marine use as it provides a medium in which diesel bugs flourish. Fuel sits for long periods in boats and bugs grow in tanks that have even a small amount of water in them - either from accidental ingress or from condensation".
However, your experience with clean tanks rather gives the lie to above. Good Luck!

You are 100% correct - road diesel does have a bio additive in it. However, Some marina's will actually sell you bio diesel but won't tell you! I guess it comes down to a game of chance.... what would you rather, fuel from a "sleepy" marina fuel tank which has sat all winter, or fuel from a "hopefully" fast moving petrol station and it sits in your tank all winter. I do strongly recommend filling your tank to the max for the winter, this reduces condensation. Best Regards Ian Ian - my concern was that mariners might have a problem with biodiesel in road fuel? Malcom,
Was wondering where that avatar showed up from.......
The port where I am at pays the electricity bill which is nice. I move from my slip to a guest dock, they get my slip for the month for guests, since there is not a meter to see how much electricity we use per hook up....
There is 19 of us parked in the guest dock area for a month. So it becomes a month long thing for general public to come look at the boats. There is a restaurant over looking the area too, so they get people coming in for dinner to see the boats. They in turn give us some gift certificates for the winners.
Last night was a potluck dinner, tonight is a prime rib fancy dinner, sunday morning is a breakfast with one of the members playing santa claus with members bringing kids and grand kids. Under 8-10 or so get presents along with pictures etc. A couple of the women have some elf / mrs claus outfits too. Have not been to the breakfast at the club yet......
A good mix from YC, port, restaurant etc for community.
Marty
