My steering wheel is squeeking pretty badly. Today I removed the compass from the pedestal an lubricated the chain and all moving parts with mechanics oil. It didn't help at all. The sound seems to be coming from up near the wheel and not below at the cables. Should I remove the actual wheel using an allen wrench and lube there? Youtube indicated that the problem would be addressed beneath the compass but it didn't work. Thanks! 32' SO by the way.

We have a similar problem on our 45DS. Last year we had a noise and then the universal joint unscrewed from the steering D used in the auto pilot system. I haven't removed the compasses and wondered what you did to get the compasses off the binical? Ian

Getting the compass off was easy. 4 screws, then lift the case, then compass. I thought that it would work after lubricating and it didn't, however.

It could be the shaft bearings of the steering wheel. They are probably nylon (or similar) and at some stage they dry out. Start by spraying some WD40 in the steering wheel bearing (from the inside) and the end side too. And then a little on the outside of the steering wheel bearing. DonĀ“t need to take the wheel off for that really. Hope that helps.

I had the same problem on our SO37 and so this vacation I lubricated the 2 wheels underneath the pedestal, so behind the 2 wooden boards in the aft cabins. This seems to help, the squeeky noise is gone.
