Hi,
I sail a Jeanneau Sun Fizz 39' 1985 equipped with a shallow keel. Any idea how to reduce drift besides centering the sails? I heard that fixing an "Beaver tail" shaped plate to the bottom of the keel helps...Anybody with some experience?
Thanks, Bert

How new are your sails, old sails will cause you to go sideways as much as anything. I have had a few issues with my 20 yr old dacs pushing me sideways in gusty winds from 15knots on up. New sails are on the list for next year, and I have a fairly deep keel in relation to the boat size.

Marty, All new sails. The question is, can we increase pointing by making a relatively cheap modification on the keel

If you are in North america, try mars keel on the east coast US. They can make or redo your keel for better performance etc.
Boatworks mag, a quarterly how too mag par of Sail, had an article about a fellow that took off the bottom part of a Shoal draft keel, and extended it using the lead from the old keel, along with some new to make a deeper draft keel.
So yes, it can be done.

Marty, I read that article too. Impressive it was. However in my case it's not worth the work and money. I decided to keep what I have. Finally what I loose up wind, I gain down wind. Thanks for your support

Hey, guys, I don't mean to butt in. How deep is your keel? I am thinking of doing the oppisite as I draw 6.5". I saw a plan with Mars I could lose a foot, and they have a kit to add bulbs to the lower sides to maintain your original ballast. It seems every where I go wheterits a dock or anchorage its never deep enough. I have a 77 38' Ginn fizz with a huge keel.
