Hi Johnandpauline. What boat you have is less relevant. What engine you have and what gearbox is the information needed if you want anybody to advise you. Volvo? Yanmar?
But....may I ask why you need to remove this nut? As if it is on a Yanmar, it has a bit of a special way of being secured. Besides that, you will most likely need new gearbox oil. As on some Yanmar gearboxes, releasing this nut, means the gearbox oil will drain out, as this nut also secures the mechanical seal. But.....depending on what type gearbox you have.
Maybe you should leave this one to a mechanic (assuming we're talking about the same nut).

Aha, good thing I asked, as this is not what I thought it was. Since you were talking about "the nut on the engine" I was under the impression you implied the one holding the flange on the gearbox.
Is there only one nut holding that flange? or more?
Maybe a photo will make things clearer. Why don't u try a few key sizes. It's probably nutsize 17 or 19, but again, they vary per brand of gearbox.
