Hi All,
My Raymarine ST60 wind was giving problems and finally packed up, The display head was tested by swapping out and the best advice I could get was to replace the masthead unit or the cable in the mast. However I came across a post in the YBW forum (http://www.ybw.com/forums/showthread.php?432946-Problems-with-raymarine-instruments) by Sailfree. I tried the solution today, changed the sequence of the Seatalk connections at the display heads and cleaned all connections with Contralube. Now everything seems to be working again.
The relevant section of the post is: "Changed position of sea talk connection at instrument and it worked OK. Greased seatalk with contralube 550 and it now works in either plug! GR advise that the instruments and connecting cable can be OK but fail due to the daisy chained seatalk cable either bad connection, failure of live feed or high resistance or occasional earthing out of the yellow cable (data). Apparently when instruments get old some problems can be fixed by altering the order of the daisy chain sea talk cable by connecting it to the problem instrument first in line. My ST 60 it was last in line."
Regards Noel

I hope I can remember this helpful bit of advice when things stop working right! Thanks for the tip.

Great bit of info. Sometimes the simplest solution is the best. I will give a try to my unit that acts up from time to time. Thanks for the idea. Joe

Everything requires maintenance, also Seatalk connections. It should be part of your standard winter or summer maintenance program.
Every couple of years unplug, spray en refit. Keeps it going for many, many years. These are the things people tend to forget about.
Another one is the earthing connector on the engine. Hardly anybody looks at that. But a rusty connection there, can cause a lot of issues in regards to electrolysis. Every 3 years, take it off, clean and sand it and refit with a little vaseline or similar.

My 2005 43DS ST60 wind direction quit working about 6 months ago. The wind speed works ok but the direction is stuck on either port or starboard broad reach no matter which way the wind is blowing. I've been to the top of the mast in hopes to clean that connector but it must be down inside the mast somewhere? There was nothing to disconnect at the unit. I never did disconnect anyting at the instrument. Maybe this is my problem....?

Hi,
It is certainly worth a try. Although I have no idea why changing the Seatalk connection sequence has any effect, perhaps it is the plugging and unplugging that is cleaning the contacts. I did use the Contralube 770 (I couldn't source the 550 mentioned in the original post) on all the connectors and plugs so hopefully that will prevent future contamination.

As far as I know it's the connection plugs that corrode. I have seen one instrument or another fail from time to time. Unplugging and re-connecting usually works. I think in my case they're fed off the autopilot. If I remember correctly, the Seatalk plugs carry power as well as signal.

There's a test procedure for the masthead sensor on the Raymarine forum. Please don't ask me why I know this and why I tried it! New B&G goes atop this week.

No direction nor windspeed indication. After unplugging and plugging the seatalk connections all came alive again , that was before I read this topic. Lateron this procedure didn't quite tackled the prob anymore . After many attempts - unplugging/plugging - I got it online again the last time. just bought an elektronicspray / contactspray and will give all the seatalk connections a rinse , will see how farit will get me. Regards

Last year I had a similar problem with the wind readout - totally erratic in direction and speed. It was narrowed to the mast head unit. I suspect some lightning damage as several neighboring yachts had had serious problems with instrument burnouts the previous October. We got the local Raymarine guy to install a reconditioned unit at about half price and all was fixed. However in case of future lightning strikes I reckoned I should try and fix the old one. I found I could buy a circuit board for about 75GBP when a new mast head unit costs about 200- 300GBP (350US$ in the US). www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Raymarine-ST30-ST40-ST60-Rotavecta-Replacement-PCB-/370953932199 Not being near my boat (or up the mast) I needed to test the repaired unit. So I spent another 100GBP on a separate tester which I could also take to the mast top. The repaired unit tests out just fine. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Raymarine-Autohelm-ST50-ST60-ST60-ST70-ST290-i60-Wind-Vane-Tester-/390621046337? Now I'm wondering how to calibrate the unit and against what. I also find the master and slave displays differ by about 10deg (magnitude not offset) and wonder how to fix. Cheers from Scarlet Lady in Turkey.
