Hello all,
A new challenge for me this spring on my 2004 SO35: The Stop Engine button on the control panel in the cockpit won't turn off the engine. So to stop the engine now, I must press the red emergency stop button on the starboard side of the engine itself, just below the air filter.
Also, the hour reading on the small LED display on the cockpit control panel sometime shows the hours - but also sometimes is either blank, or shows nonsensical characters.
The issue of the engine not stopping happened on two or three rare occasion over the past couple of seasons, but now seems to be a permanent situation.
Any thoughts on what might be happening?
Many thanks,
John Reverie - SO35

Sounds like you need to clean up all the contacts on the wiring harness to the control panel. The hour meter is run off the alternator. There are various threads about the problems with manky connections to the panel on here.

The kill button on the panel energizes the stop engine solenoid on the engine. Either the contacts in the button are corroded or the solenoid is bad. The solenoid is right where you're pushing on the "emergency stop button". You should be able to trace the wiring to find the wire from the panel to the solenoid, put a voltmeter on it and then have someone push the kill button to see if it's at the panel or the solenoid. Failed hour meters on Yamar panels are ubiquitous I'm afraid. Here's a good documentation of what it takes to take one apart and fix it. If you're bold and electrically inclined you can try the same. Another option is to install a simple hour meter. To sync them up you need to have a good estimate of the number of hours on your engine. Otherwise document what you did for future owners and start at zero.

Hello all, The stop button turned out to be an easy fix. The issue was definitely with the stop button, and not the solenoid at the side of the engine. I removed the panel in the cockpit, and cleaned the contacts at the back of the stop button. I then tried to clean any corrosion on the contacts inside the stop button by pushing it many times (with the engine off). Seems to have worked. The stop button now works every time. The hour meter is a separate issue. I found a great report on how to fix it on the website below: forums.sbo.sailboatowners.com/showthread.php?t=148593This will be a winter project for me, I think. Cheers, John

I have fitted a 12v mechanical hourmeter from RS Components next to the Tachometer unit. Cost=£6.95
I just simply wired it into the live feed on the ignition. Much simpler than hooking to alternator. After all, when would you have the ignition on with out the engine running? So ignition on, hourmeter starts counting. Ignition off, hourmeter off.
I had to get mine to 925 hours, so I left it running for 36 hours on an alarm, the got it to read 925 watching it for an hour or two.
Simples.
Just occasionally, the Yanmar LCD hourmeter comes back to life, but no way am I going back to that.
Advantage: You can read it anytime as it is a mechanical display Disadvantage: It's not lit.

Thanks, Full Circle. Great move.
One more question - where on the boat did you install the new hour meter?

Hi, I am the happy owner of A SO32 2005
I had both similar faults. At different occassions.
Eng Will not stop - ny foot had turned the engine key in OFF - turned on again and everything Working fine. RPM and engine hour meter- i cleaned everything but no success - then considering simple electrical RPM meter at low costs But When looking for how to wire it I found A bad wire which then fixed and now everything Working fine for last Two years.
Best advise - check yr wires at the generator.. !!
