We're thinking of adding a freezer to our 2006 49DS. Currently it has a Frigoboat compressor and plate in the fridge. There is another locker adjacent to the fridge that is insulated and has a drain. It looks like the intent was that this could be made into a freezer. Has anyone done this?
Our other option is just to buy one of the stand alone freezers. This would probably be cheaper, but it would be less convenient to have to find someplace to stow it that was accessible.
Any suggestions?
Thanks, Dennis

We had a friend who adjusted the locker in to a keel cooled fridge freezer and we would do the same if we could find a reliable fitter. If you are in the south of England I can get the name of the reliable fitter. It won't be a cheap job but we think it be well worth it on Affinty. We live on board 6 months of the year. Ian

That locker is for the freezer which was not installed. Its easy to add a compressor, like the refrig, but as suggested the keel cooled unit is really good. I have the keel cooled unit which I find very efficient and trouble free. A fitter would be the preferred way to install.

It's easy to do yourself if you don't have a keel cooled type, mine took a few hours to install, not keel cooled but has no problem keeping cold in Mediterranean summers, there are few options and the best do take up space in the freezer but do keep it cool. Did mine for £600 for the two units, compressor and freezer unit, the self sealing connections were much simpler than expected, they all seem to use Danfoss compressor (50 series is best for a freezer), seems to cycle less than the fridge unit, but I guess still uses a fair amount of power.
