Hi everyone. I have a 2010 Sun Odyssey 42DS which is based down in Spain. I lost one of the guardwires on the gate section lengths over the side last year and want to source a replacement before I return in a few weeks time. I measured it before I left last year, but have lost my bit of paper! I seem to remember that it was 56cm from stirrup fixing to the end of the thread. Can anyone confirm this and also tell me what diameter the wire is (4mm or 5mm??). I would also need to know what size thread it is for the pelican clip. Maybe M8 or M10. Any help before I head back down to the boat with a tape measure rather than a replacement part would be appreciated. Many thanks Tim Peacock

Tim, as an alternative to an expensive wire have you considered a double eye sling made from 4/5mm Dyneema core? Make it to the length you need less the turnbuckle and ha ho there you go. Double eye splice. The fids are a good buy. See my post on soft shackles. Ian Dyneema core on eBayBTW where are you in Spain. We're at Viviero right now.

Thanks Ian - I hadn't thought of doing it that way and will bear it in mind. It would probably be worth having one as a spare in case I lose another one over the side in any case. We are down in Sant Carles De La Rapita, south of Barcelona. We will be down there just after Easter, so I hope that the weather is improving. Many thanks - Tim

One can perany race rules now use systems or equal line that is as wrong as wire for safety lines and some use it to shrouds too. A little line length like this will not save a lot of weight, but if you redid the whole boat, you can save a bunch. Cost is a bit less. Easier to dyi.

Many thanks Tim Peacock Tim, Our 2009 42DS is in Aguadulce at present and I measured the safety lines before leaving last year. I've been ill and haven't done anything about replacing them yet. However, I do have my notes to hand. Gate lines top & bottom, port and starboard were all identical at 530mm. I also wrote "all gate lines were measured from threaded end to extreme end of fork, 8mm less if measured to centre of pin". I sounds as if I measured from the end of the swaged, forked fitting to the other swaged, threaded fitting, excluding the screw on pelican hook part. I also measured the wires and put down 4.08mm wire, 6.28mm including the plastic coating. I hope that this helps but may I well have noticed this thread a little too late to provide the information prior to your return to Spain.

Thanks for everyone's help on this. I'm down on the boat at the moment and have remeasured the gate guard wire. In case it is of future help to anyone, the wire is 4mm diameter and the length of each gate section is 600mm bearing point to bearing point, i.e. the distance between the two attachments. I have just ordered a new one from an online chandlery and the cost for the whole piece including fork, pin and pelican clip is about £50. Moral of the story is to check those little wire clips that hold the pin in religiously! Tim
