The other Led lighting tread just remind me something I was going to ask here I've bought 2 new downlights which I will install in the galley. On the galley switch I only have 1 light which is above the sink. The two new ones will be fitted over the fridge and stove and will be added to the same circuit. I got downlights with built in switches in case I don't need them on. Anyway my question is, what's the best approach to making the holes. The light requires a 50mm hole whilst the light fitting is 77mm. I'm not sure whether to cut a 50mm circle in the vinyl liner and then make the hole in the wood, or whether I should make the hole in the wood a little bigger than 50mm and fold the vinyl into the hole. I am dreading the thought that I will screw up and will end up with a vicsble split in the vinyl coming out of the light fitting

It seems to me that trying to cut a larger hole in the wood while preserving the vinyl that is trying to become entangled and a participant in the cutting process is fraught with risk.

Yeah, probably. I think there is less risk of a screwup if I just cut both at 50. I just have a vague recollection that the vinyl was folded in on the other lights, but I may be totally wrong. I guess I have to wait until my next visit.

Once you cut the hole, you're making a commitment to cover it up. Unless you tear the vinyl, the finshed result won't really depend on folding the vinyl in the hole since the light fixture is much larger than the hole.
I think your idea of cutting the vinyl first is a good one. This would help ensure that your hole saw doesn't make a mess of it.

Job is done :-)
Before doing any cutting I wired up one light and positioned on the ceiling and found that one light would do the job. I opened the fridge and a few cupboards and then moved the light checking the shadows until I found the best position.
To install I cut the vinyl first and then used the dremel to cut then sand a roughly round hole.
It looks good, as if it wasn't me who installed it ;-)
