Advice appreciated, want a pole for genoa downwind and possibly assy spinnaker. Which works, a spinnaker pole same length as J dimension or longer, or an adjustable length whisker pole. problem I have is the only whisker pole I can find is a Forespar, it doesn't fit a sparcraft mast track ( metric 32 x5.5) and sparcraft only make spinnaker poles but car etc will fit the track, as the mast is a sparcraft. boat is a DS50 with classic mast.

We had the standard Selden spi pole for our 39i slightly shortened to make the perfect whisker pole. I measured the required length following experimentation with a boathook. We don't use it for the asymmetric, fly that loose. On the 39i at least, with its outboard shrouds I needed to rig a new sheet outside all to a snatch block aft to get a good sheeting angle. All works great and the pole stores vertically on the mast so really easy to use.

For poling out a jib/genoa, I find that a length of around 80% of the LP is about right. So a spin pole with a J measure may be a bit short or long depending upon the LP.
On the other hand, unlike a lot of folks, I do upon occasion, especially for deep running with I disagreey spin, I do pole the tack out with a spin pole. Helps to get it so I can run a few more degree's down wind vs free. BUT, this puts a lot more strain on the pole, and found a whisker pole the correct length of the J is too small and weak.
So I have ended up with both. BUT, I also have a masthead rig. A 140 with the std J spin poles is perfect. My 110, too long, so the whisker pole at its shortest length is perfect. Extended it perfect for the 155, somewhere in the middle perfect for the 140. It bends when used with the assym. Hence why I also have a spin pole!
Depending upon how you operate, you may need both, or one. If you are trying to go with one, A spin pole may be the best option due to strength if you are going to use it with a spin of any sort.
