Here's your average block , be it that this one is fixed on the foot of the mast. Take a closer look at the pen where the ring passes through. Not sure how much longer that would of held , but I would most certainly be in for a supprise sooner or later. Regards

That looks like some of the blocks on my 85 arcadia when I bought her at 20 yrs old or so. Most blocks etc have been replaced. I could see this happening in the 10-20 yr range, depending upon the block manufacture, quality of material, useage etc.
It is also recommended you replace all SS wire at around 20 yrs also. That will be one of my next projects unless I sell the boat and go newer.

I replaced all of Voyageur's mast base blocks this season with Garhauers. I also replaced the original, thin studs (as seen in the picture above) with Z-Spars #4810 that are nearly as thick as the U-bracket sides are spaced, to minimize movement and angular wear. Not cheap, but looks good and seems to be wearing well.

I've had a couple of mast foot blocks break over the years but never saw wear like that. The foot (don't know what to call it) on the original blocks were more narrow than the one in you photo so that it was a snug fit connecting to the pin from the mast foot. I could not find similar replacements so I used something similar to what you have, but that broke fairly quickly (a season) as the pin settled to one side of the block, pulling it at a bad angle. Now I have fitted washers on the pin on the block to ensure that the pressure is centred (does any of this make sense?) I notice that Z-spars actually has replacements listed on their site, although I have no idea what the correct size is Z-spars

Our local rigger [well respected] is of the strong opinion that one should use a cotter pin which fully fills the hole in the clevis pin as opposed to a cotter ring as shown in the photo. This will stop the asymmetrical wear caused by a smaller diameter cotter ring. Also, those 20 year old danish blocks were never a a long lasting item. Over time I replaced all of them on my previous beneteau [1986]

I have the diagram with all the Z-Spar part numbers if you want. Furthermore, I agree with jdl01. I have replaced the rings too with split pins (cotter pins), but also I have a nylon washer first, to restrict the sideways movement.

I have the z-spars catalog saved but had forgotten which mast. I do have a photo of the id tag on the mast for that info some where in my photo library So for the SO40 it's Part No. 275Weird site design.... You can add the part to the "bag" and "checkout" without ever seeing the price

if you want be sure, replace it to Harken. It`s a little bit more expensive, but you may trust in it!
