When preparing meals the Captain has often complained that the lighting over the gas burners is not enough to really see what is happening, particularly as we are getting a bit older and our sight is becoming a little less effective. A small halogen lamp is installed above the refrigerator but nothing directly above the stove. I decided to install a LED light above the stove and powered off the same power source used by the halogen light. This comes off the "Cabin Lights" switch on the main switch panel at the Nav Station. This shows the light position nice and close to the action. The wiring was taken from the other light using pretty thin gauge wire tucked up in behind the grab rail so it is never seen. I used a hot glue gun to stick it in place in behind the rail. I hope this may help someone else who is advised the lighting in the galley could be improved. It was a pretty painless and fast installation and provides greater comfort when preparing the meals.

Trevor , you could have supplied the Captain a head light , I'm sure that would have been cheaper and less work . But I understand that life is about giving and taking , the love of a man goes through his stomach. Nice modification anyway, let there be light. Regards EDIT But can I ask you something ? Does that microwave/oven combo stays locked while sailing ? Or did you nailed/screwed it down ? Just curious.

Ahaa sailbleu, quite right a head lamp would have been easier and less hassle but I would have suffered in other ways not quite as tangible if you know what I mean!!
The microwave sits behind quite a high ledge and stays in place while underway sailing. It cannot easily escape the enclosure without jumping over that ledge and it has never moved too much when under way.

In our SO42DS I got a standard ceiling light from Jeanneau (Quick) and installed it over the stove, tapping into the lights circuit nearby. The hard part was drilling the 60 odd millimetre hole in the ply without cutting or ripping the lining, but care with a hole saw worked. You wouldn't know it isn't standard, and it works well for both the stove and the fridge next to it.

Hello Xantia, The previous owner fitted one as you describe in our boat as well. Unfortunately it is fitted a little too far back behind the head of the Captain when she is taking charge of the galley. I can imagine the cutting of the hole would be tricky and in my case could end in tears.......mine.... I'm glad the last owner did it for me.. Regards,
