I'm a bit surprised that on my newly acquired 2006 SO35, there don't seem to be any points in the cockpit to clip a lifeline onto? Would expect to find at least one as you exit the companionway into the cockpit Has anyone retrofitted them?

I have installed Wichard U-bolts for clipping on tethers in my SO36i as they match what is on the boat. There was one attachment point under the cockpit table and I have added one in the companionway, the nuts are under the stairs, and one into the rear lazarette. The minimum number of attachment points that you will need is specified in the special regulations governing racing and in my opinion should apply to cruising as well. Far better to prevent someone going over the side than trying to pick them up.

Agree, the Wichard U bolts are not low price, but they have a great self-sealing system which makes fitting them (use a backing piece of ply as well) really easy. I fitted them on our last 2 boats and they are simple to use with carabiner hooks

We do things a little differently, instead of attaching a life line to a harness then clipping onto a hook or ring with a carbineer we have found its safer to attach the life line to a strong point so it can enter the companionway and you clip the carbineer onto your harness while you are still inside the boat, so there is no time at all when you are on deck you are not tethered. With several lifelines already attached around the deck its no problem to clip another one on before you remove the first one so you are always clipped on. Very reassuring at night in F11 - trust me!
You need at least one strong point near the helm and one each side near the primary winches and as previously stated one in or near the companionway. If you plan go forward then a couple on the coach-roof and one at the bow would be good - all with a life line permanently attached. Our boat has wichards fitted as standard but 1 1/2" U bolts are better, much easier to get more than one life line on them.
