Hi Guys
I have the single cylinder Bmw 7 diesel engine fitted (I know but can't afford a Yanmar) When running in gear its started putting out oil initially and now black smoke and black water. Strangest thing to me because running at tick over to full throttle in neutral the water is clean with no black smoke. I can't for the life of me think of why it should do this unless the water runs around the gearbox but cant imagine that.
Please help me I cant use the boat now without polluting the water and I sail on an inland lake in South Africa.

I had the same boat with an older Yanmar 1GM for about 12 years. Pretty sure it was only 6.5HP. I came across this problem a few times but only when the engine was working too hard. I can't describe the exact mechanism, but my view is that the boat is demanding more HP than the engine can provide and the engine is calling for more fuel than it can burn. So what you are seeing is unburned fuel coming out of the exhaust. With my old boat, this only occurred when towing or when the prop or bottom was badly fouled. My Fantasia was a little under-powered. I remember using a fuel additive that can help to an extent, but don't remember the name. I'd start with a swim to check the prop & bottom.

I eventually found the problem. I removed the injector pipe and turned the engine and there was barely a dribble coming out of the injection pump. I have ordered a repair kit and new nozzle for the injector. Hope this cures the problem.
