Has anyone fitted a liferaft cradle on the coach roof of a 2008 45DS? How did you do it? Did you need to remove the traveller and lift the coach roof cover section? Thanks Ian

We have a 2008 SO42DS. I just ordered a Viking 4 person cradle to mount on the coach roof. My plans are to secure the front end just aft of the opening hatch as that avoid the removable cover and then secure the after end ...aft. I'm thinking I'll have to remove the coach cover to install standoffs between the real roof and the cover for a secure attachment. I won't have the cradle for 2 weeks, but I take some pictures & post them when I go thru the installation. If someone has already done it, I sure would love to get the details also with pictures.

I have done it on my 45DS. I will take a photo this weekend and (try to) post it. It was impossible to remove the panels after removing the screws as they were sika'ed down so I screwed it on with self tappers making sure that they stayed above the sliding hatch. Been on for a couple of years now with no adverse effects so seems to work.

Make sure the life raft cradle is well fastened down. A local yacht, a Beneteau 50 had the following experience:-
"4.4 At the height of the storm, at approximately 2100, the life raft went overboard when a large sea washed over the boat as it tacked and carried away the life raft from its stowage on top of the coach house. The raft flew between the helmsman and a crewmember in the cockpit, passed over the after guard rails and disappeared into the night. The life raft’s painter was not secured to the boat."
Just to round off this event the yacht subsequently sank leaving the crew in the water at midnight! Fortunately all were rescued.
I think there is a good case for keeping the life raft in a cockpit locker.

Consider this: To launch the liferaft from the Jeanneau design locker on our 45DS we need to lift both lazarttes and hook them back; lift the stern steps and hook them back and then pull the l/r out while standing on the stern step. To lift the stern step you need to be on the lowest stern step to over come the weight of the step. The 45DS had one cockpit locker which is in daily use. Try doing all of that when you really need your liferaft in a stormy sea. Topping it all off my wife weighs in at 55kg and simple would not have the strength to get the liferaft out of the locker. We've been around this a number of times and feel the designated liferaft locker is a design flaw by Jeanneau; although ecstatically pleasing on the eye, not a sailors solution. With a liferaft in a locker it cannot self deploy.

Ian, I agree.
Lifting a life raft is never easy - especially a cannister version, add to that possible rough conditions, possible injury etc it would become impossible for a normal couple crew.
For this reason we mounted ours on the ster.n. pull a single lever and it set deploys.
We made rhis decision even after a friend lost his pushpin when a wave broke over it on an Atlantic crossing (a Vancouver 38) . We have No plans for ocean crossing so are not likely to meet such extreme forces.
We have added extra strengthening bars to the pushpin which have made the whole area more secure.

OK I have taken photos but I can't seem to incorporate them into a post. If anyone knows how to could you let me know? In relation to fitting the cradle, I screwed it onto the coach roof. I put rubber 'feet' under the stainless steel to raise it up a bit so that the screws didn't 'foul' the coach roof. It has stayed put through a few tasty sails. Definitely safer than trying to get it out of the garage.

Try going to tinypic.com and uploading your image there. They will give you a URL that you can paste into your message using the "Insert Image" tool, which is the 6th button from the right in the "Create Post" page. For reference, the smiley face is the 1st button on the right. Don

Today Universal Safety delivered our new life raft in form of Simon their Workshop Manger getting on the fast ferry from Poole to Guernsey with new raft. We had it fitted about 90 minutes later. To make it fit as shown we had to reverse the upper and lower retaining arms to gave enough lift to get the raft away from the backstay. This is because the backstay was fouling the raft. As it is it's still very close. We have to compromise on the hydrostatic release as this can only be fitted if the raft is horizontal and in our case on the coach roof. We would also have liked to turn the raft around 90 degrees on the Pushpit but would compromise security of attachment and we know where that lead us last time. So we're 80% happy with the solution and 100% happy with Universal Safety. Off to Roscoff at 5am. [img src="http://i62.tinypic.com/zuk35u.jpg" src="http:// " alt=" "] Can't get image embed.
