Has anyone expereinced this display problem with their RL80c plotter (which used to be a popular fit on Jeanneaus). I appreciate that when you zoom in to some charts the you lose the surronding map but this is set on 6nms! I can get a full screen picture on 12nms and closer, it's just at the 6nm range I am missing a lot of detail. The C-Map supplier says he has checked and the data for all charts was downloaded. Raymarine can't offer much of an explanation and tried to sell me a new system!!

is the C-map you are using new?
If it is new, have you tried using an old map memory card?
Do you have an option to set the level of detail? If so, try setting for less detail and try it?
Maybe you can check if your unit has the latest (last released) firmware version.
I am not surprised Raymarine tried to sell you a new unit. It's just not worth the effort for them or the cost for you to spend much time at all on it.

Yes it is a new memory card.
I am not sure if you can set the level of detail but I will look for this feature in the manual. Raymarine, said it might be that I am using an NT Wide memory card which the unit cannot read but all my other memory cards are NT wide and no problems with them.
If there is a C-Map supplier down in the Ionian I will ask for a card with a smaller area on. This one is supposed to cover the Ionian through the Corinth canal.
I gather there is a Raymarine agent in Lefkas so I will also get him to check the firmware too.

You unit was designed and built hen dinosaurs still roamed the earth, and whilst the card and data format you have from C-map is compatible, maybe the level of detail or some other factor makes it not work. I would not be surprised if the unit filled up it's memory before it filled the screen or something like that... Put it this way... Windows XP was released in 2001 and still works now, a lot of software out on the market now might still work on an XP computer, but because of memory and processor requirements, the software won't work on a machine that was built to 2001 XP specifications... There is a time to take a tough decision on old electronics, either replace the unit or accept that it cannot be updated and live with the limitations, which might in this case means use the maps you already have and outside of that use it to get the co-ordinates to look up on paper charts. I will be surprised if Dieter (Raymarine Lefkas) does not very quickly also try to sell you a new unit :-) I was just looking at the Jeppesen site and your device is compatible with the C-map NT .... not the C-map NT +

Hi Hoppy,
Thanks for the comments. I double checked and my RL80c and the slave unit, an RL70C, are both 'plus' models with HSB2 which, in theory, should allow the NT+ C-Maps to display. I have however just come across this from Raymarine...
C-Map has increased its coverage areas substantially since the original NT series from ten years ago. Therefore, some of the NT compatible chart plotters may run slower or require additional upgrades to work with the current NT+ series. For Raymarine owners, your chart plotters must have PLUS or HSB2 upgrade to be compatible with most NT+ cards.
As this cartridge is just 12 months old maybe it's one that doesn't fit in the 'most' category! I will drop in to see Dieter and see what he has to say (apart from I can do you deal on the very latest!) and see if there is a new firmware upgrade I need.
Do you happen to know if he is a Jepps C-Map agent? He may be able to sell me a cartridge that is more compatible. Alas, a new system is not on the cards this year.

Good luck

Thanks again.
I have been in touch with Dieter and hopefully we can get a little more useful life out of the kit before a complete change.
Back to simple colours!

At last I have managed to visit my boat and get a Raymarine engineer to check all the settings.
My firmware was version 4.11. Which is the latest available (May 2014). However, the technician performed a full reset on both the 80C+ and the 70C+ and, hey presto, I could get a proper display of the chart at any range!
I say could, because three days later it started to drop the charts again!!!
The problem he suggested was the new level of sophistication with the latest C-Maps. They just push older chart plotters to the limit. I will re-perform another system re-set when I next visit and see if I can get back the full display capabilities.
Anyone considering a system re-set should bear in mind that this needs to be followed by a re-calibration performed through the auto-pilot control and involves a 360 turn. I am still out of the water until the 2nd June so this should be interesting as there seems to be a lot of button pressing to get to the right menus and I have already forgotton most of what I was told to do.
TIP: If you ever get a technician showing you how to perform a task film it on your iPhone for later referral.
