Hi, I'm new to the forum. I've placed an offer on a 2006 49DS and we're getting the inspection and sea trials done next week. Are there any chronic problems with this boat that I should be looking out for? I have seen threads on rudder problems, so I will ask the surveyor to give the rudder a good look when he inspects it. Anything else?
One item from another thread that concerns me is water leakage from stanchion mounting screws. I think they were referring to a larger boat, so I don't know if the 49 has similar issues. Isn't using screws into a wood core deck a no-no due to water ingress rotting out the core?
Thanks, Dennis

ALL Jeanneau installed thru hulls should be replaced. Is there something I can look for to see if the ones on this boat are bad? If this has been a problem it is possible these have already been fixed. Thanks, Dennis

Personally speaking on a 2006 boat I'd replace all the through hull fittings anyway. Unless of course they have been done in the last year or two and the current owner can prove this has been done.

It's a great boat and we really have enjoyed ours. We have had a couple of issues with our boat, but most were issues from the previous owner. He let the boat sit extended amount of time. Also, he didn't really do a very good checkout of the boat after commissioning, as a few things that were wrong should have been caught at that time.
As for the thru hulls, it's the one area you will want to watch as was pointed out. I have kept a close eye on ours, and it appears that the larger valves were mostly the problem. Both holding tank discharge valves, the raw water engine intake, and the valve on the water line for the stuffing box have had to be replaced. The rest, I exersize the valves regularely and haven't had a problem as of yet.
BTW, the thru hull portion is fine, it is the valve that corrodes out. But here in the USA, it was actually cheaper to just replace the entire thru hull and valve.
Hope everything works out! It's a great boat.

You didn't say where the boat is located and where you will be using it. If it's a fresh water boat, the thru-hulls and valves probably are fine.

Thanks for the info guys. I have mentioned rudder and through hull issues to the surveyor and I'll be watching for them also.
The boat has spent its whole life in salt water around Vancouver B.C.
Thanks, Dennis
