As this subject came up in another thread, I thought it might be useful for some to start a new one:
I recently found out - by chance - that there was an anode that needs replacement every 5 to 7 years on the Raritan water heater.
I'm not sure if this also holds true on other brands of water heaters. In any event, if you have a Raritan, the magnesium anode is about 35 cm long (roughly the diameter of the heater). It is screwed into the hot water side of the heater. You first have to remove the plumbing fitting with a pipe wrench, and then unscrew the anode- or rather, what is left of it, a long, thin metal rod, and then screw in the new one. Make sure you've turned off the pressure system first, and drained all water from the pipes by leaving the taps open. Also, use enough teflon tape or equivalent and tighten well.
Replacement anodes for this heater can be found at the Raritan distributor in each country, they cost around 40 euros
