Following information is a bit confusing, perhaps someone else can clarify. I'd guess that page 4 is referring to the clearances you need and page 7 is referring to another clearance on the tappet (can't think what at present).
Source: Yanmar JH4 Series Service Manual, 2007 edition.
Section 5 Page 4: Valve Clearance -Intake / exhaust 0.2 ± 0.05 mm (0.0079 ± 0.0020 in.) Same across the JH4 range according to the document
Section 5 Page 7: Tappet clearance 0.010 +0.033 / +0.080 mm (0.0004 +0.0013 / +0.0031 in.) I believe that the clearances are the same for both the 3JH4E & 4JH4AE according to document

My overhaul manual for the 4JH series of engines states 0.20 mm +- .05 mm COLD for all variants engine at TDC.
that's an 8 thou .008" feeler gauge in old money.
incidentally the rule of 9 also works with this engine.

Thanks guys! 8 thou sounds about right to me! Is the service manual available online? Or can you tell me where to get one from?
Cheers Andy

Following on from this, would someone happen to know the valve clearances for the 3YM30? Mine has now gone well past 50 hours and the tappets should be checked as part of the first oil change service, but of course, the valve clearances don't seem to be given in the owners manual.

Yanmar Service Manual for 3YM30/3YM20/2YM15 (Doc. 0BYMM-G00100, 2007 I think) says:
Section 5.2.8 page 115 Make adjustments when the engine is cool Inlet and exhaust valve clearance 0.15 - 0.25 mm
I hope that this helps.

Thanks Mistroma. After posting my request above, I googled for the 3YM30 service manual, and immediately found a link to a downloadable copy, which is below: 3YM30 Service ManualThis was a real surprise to me, as I have tried to find the 2GM20F service manual in the past with no luck. Obviously, I have downloaded a copy of the pdf and have it on my iPad and laptop! There are also links for the 4JH4E manual, but I didn't check them out to see if they are a downloadable pdf version, or are on-line in a reader.
