I will be shipping my 43DS back to the US at the end of October, from Southampton. I think I will try to get the boat there by about the first of October, after the boat show, and will leave it there while I go back to France to pack up my house. The ship back to the US leaves some time after October 25, and I will fly to Southampton to put my boat on the ship about this time.
Do any of our British members have any recommendations for a marina in the Southampton Water that would be a good place to leave my boat for a month? I don't need much in the way of amenities, but want it to be secure and not too far from the Southampton container docks, where the boat will be hoisted on to the ship. I will probably sail over from Cherbourg, so any advice about sailing around the Solent at the end of September would also be appreciated. The boat will be shipped mast-up, so I don't need any dismasting facilities. Just some place for me to tie up and strip all the canvas off of it and get it ready for transport.
Thanks.
UPDATE 31AUG2013
The shipper now has a vessel leaving from la Rochelle, so now I won't have to travel to Southampton.

Hi RXC
Not logged in for a while, but saw your update, so see the Southampton info not now required - but for completeness of thread or others we sailed from the MDL Marina at Shamrock Quay for 2 seasons, it is cheaper than Ocean Village and a lot cheaper than the Hamble Marinas. Staff very helpful and 24 hour security and good pontoons, lots of marine businesses nearby, but bit industrial in terms of views but we would go back ( not yet planning to be based in Swansea next year). The MDL offer o being able to go to their other Marinas takes some beating as well.
Do let us know how the shipping goes back Stateside and what your plans will then be
Glad to have met you last year in Oban - hope your European experience has been positive
very best

Malcolm,
Thanks for that great info. We will always remember our trips to Scotland - the Jeanneau Rally and the Malts cruises, and both voyages around the British Isles were amazing. After 4 months of 5-10m tides and rocks, it will be boring to sail on the East Coast of the US. And, having the boat only 10 minutes away from the house will be a totally new experience. I can imagine unloading a LOT of tools from the boat into my new garage.
We will be home-ported in Stuart, Florida, moving north during the hurricane season and south and east during the winter. Hopefully Cuba will open up at some point and we will get a chance to explore another strange, new world. We will continue to write the boat blog, and it will get updated with photos of the move from la Rochelle to Ft. Lauderdale. I already have volunteers to help me move from Ft. Lauderdale to Stuart. Only 2 days motoring up the ICW.
And I will continue to frequent this board, which is an extraordinary resource for Jeanneau owners.

Hi Ralph
I look forward to following your blog on the shipment. Sounds like you have a great plan, Cuba would be fascinating, but guess limited facilities. Thanks or the positive feedback - the success of the forum and website is totally down to the quality of the Members who really do help each other so much by their active participation and contributions
very best
