We are currently looking at two SO 45DS - one with 1.65m shallow keel and one with the 2.05m keel.
Obviously the shallow keel will give us access to a number of shallow ports in the Baltic Sea but in a couple of years we want to go ocean cruising and maybe even an ARC
Should we go for the shallow or long keel?

The answer is very simple , if you want performance you should go for the deep keel , period. I have a shallow keel and would not want it in an other way , but then again , I'm a cruiser not a racer. I like anchoring in places where deep keelers cannot get ,there is however such a thing as habituation . Meaning , sometimes a shallow keel isn't shallow enough , if you catch my drift.

Hi and welcome to the forum There is a recent thread on a similar consideration for the 36i jeanneau.proboards.com/thread/2654/offshore-cruising-36i-shallow-draftIf you are not a racer so that the slight trade off in absolute pointing ability is not that relevant I like Sailbleu would go for the shallow draft, as well as the Baltic, Holland, east coast of UK and all the canal systems mean that anything above 1.7m will be a restriction Malcolm

I have a shallow keel 40DS and find she points okay, the inmast main is probably the biggest hindrance to performance. On the 40DS the shallow keel is heavier to compensate which helps bring the ballast ratio up a bit from 32% to 36%.
The only annoyance i have is the shallow keel is rounded both fore and across and so I never felt brave enough to dry out against a wall, while the deep keel has a flat bottom and would take the ground better. However the 45ds may be different.
