I recently purchased a 36i 2007. I've noticed that the masthead tends to pump when going to windward. This is the first fractional rig boat that I've owned and I'm not sure what to do about it. I've tightened up the backstay a bit, but there's plenty of prebend on the mast so I don't want to add any more. I don't see any way to stabilize the top of the mast. Anyone else notice this?
Thx David

Congrats on the 36i - a fantastic boat. I had some mast pumping in my 36i that was due to loose lower shrouds. I chickened out and got a rigger to look at the boat, and after tightening the lowers the problem was solved. The swept back spreader design probably means that most of the fore and aft mast stiffness is controlled by the spreaders. may also pay to check spreader attachments on the mast to make sure nothing has come loose.

Thanks for the advice, I'll tighten the lowers a bit. I need to go aloft to change a light bulb and I'll give everything a close inspection while up there.

The lowers will have little to no effect on the masthead moving around. You'll probably still need to tension them up, but I suspect it's your upper (cap) shrouds that are the main cause.
